-Saved By The Bell-

A Column by

Vigilante

You remember those Saturday Mornings in the late 80's early 90's where you would flip on the tv, turn to NBC, and begin singing the words "When I wake up in the morning, and my alarm gives off a warning..and I think I'll never make it on time. By the time I get my books, and I give myself a look..I'm at the corner just in time to see the bus fly by...". One would sit there wondering what scheme the cast would get into, how many women the main character can end up with, and basically how many ways the nerd can be dissed by his love. For that half and hour to an hour, you were right their in high school with the gang. What gang? Zack, Slater, Kelly, Screech, Lisa, Jesse, and Tori.....the "Saved by the Bell" gang.

Oh don't act like you don't remember this show. The show that had you living in a fantasy world about what high school would be like. Never going to class, hanging out in the hall way 24/7, and finding different ways to get in and out of trouble. It was very different when you got there wasn't it? Yes people, you would actually live your life through the lives of Zack, Kelly, Slater, and the gang. It was so bad that you actually wanted to send a bomb in the mail to Kelly when she broke up with Zack at the now infamous prom, just so she could get with the older Jeff, who ended up cheeting on her,and sending Kelly to grovel back to Zack. Man...talk about heart wrenching.

Guys wanted to be him, and girls wanted to be with him. Zack Morris was the epitome of sweetness, and everyone in every school had their friends and clique's that in someway embodied the feel Saved by the Bell gave. But these characters couldn't be in highschool forever. No, like all of us in our lives...there is something beyond high school...."The College years".

If you don't know what I'm talking about when I say "The College Years"...you don't believe to even breathe near the grave of "Saved By The Bell". In the years of 1993-1994, Zack, Slater, Screech, and eventually Kelly headed to Tuesday primetime to embark upon their journeys at "California University". I think Vigi here is one of the few people who watched the show, but I adored it. Unfortunately, it only lasted for one season. Why didn't it suceed?? Who knows, Tuesday sucks as a day for television then? Perhaps "Saved By The Bell" fans didn't want the show in primetime? Who knows? But no matter what it was, the characters of Saved by the Bell ended in the way that it should have. In a prime time movie that had Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski join each other in matrimony. The perfect way to end a legacy.

Now, you may notice how I 've said that the "characters" ended, and these "stories" were put to rest. Well, the named "Saved By the Bell" continues in the form of a new class. A carbon coby, and horrible replica, of the orginal cast that could never replace the charm and pizzaz the original class had. Obviously Peter Engel realized this as the cast has changed 3 times since the new class started, even steeping so low as to bring back the classic character of Screech. It had some moments, but it never could compare to the Morris clan. Of course, even good things have to come to the end...and Saved By The Bell: The New Class has been cancelled in its 1999-2000 season. Engel (creator of SbtB) is working on something new for the Saved by the Bell franchise, but I think he should leave well enough alone. The name already will   bring a tear to one's eye, a flutter to one's heart, and the mutterance of "GO BAYSIDE" from one's lips.
