Issue #3 - June 1st

A Column by

Goc

The Goc is here, with the third issue of Movie Marks. The biggest weekend of the year has just passed, and there isn't a better time to discuss movies. So, let's get on with it...

Recent News/Gossip....

-$75 dollar weekend sound bad? Well in the case of Pearl Harbor, I'm afraid it does. Everyone expected it to take the Lost World's record for biggest weekend, but it came up way short. Personally I'm very surprised, but you have to admit Harbor isn't too appealing to the younger generation and we know what effect that age category has on box office return. Sure Affleck and other pretty boys are involved, but we need more then love and bombs to get us to the theater.

-Personally I never saw the first one, but there is going to be a sequel to the Jackie Chan/Owen Wilson comedy Shanghai Noon. Personally I hate that squirrelly bastard and I won't see the first or the second...but that's just me.

-Rumor has it that a Matrix 2 trailer is coming very soon. Personally I think it's way too early, but perhaps it's just going to be a nice vague little teaser. Either way, I'm going to be all over it.

-It's been annouced that Vin Diesal will star in the film adaption of comic book, Hellboy. I've never read any of this comic, or many for that matter. But by the looks of this image of the main character, and Diesal's flava, it's sure to rule:

Don't Miss this Movie in the Theaters....

WATCH

Memento

memento_poster.jpg (7768 bytes) Why? - The best movie of the year? So far, it's definitely got that title sewn up. If this movie doesn't get nomiated for at least a few Oscars, I'm going to be one pissed mark. If this movie is in your area, see it...NOW!!

Avoid this Movie At All Costs...

FEAR

Vertical Limit

Vertical Limit.gif (8624 bytes) Why? - The trailer looked like pure adrenaline, but I missed it in the theaters. So as soon as it came out on DVD, I was determined to rent it. I got my hands on it....and..well...who writes this crap? The story is laughable and has more plot holes than shooks underwear. I piss.

Predictions...

-Moulin Rogue is going to own the box office charts when it gets a chance next week. When I first saw the previews for this one, I was a little perplexed at why this movie was being released this close to summer. But what do women have to see right now? Pearl Harbor? A Knight's Tale? Nah! Nothing brings in the older women like Nicole Kidman, and the "Lady Marmalade" song should bring in some of the teenyboopers.

-I honestly think that Tomb Raider will open to a bigger weekend than Pearl Harbor. I know that's crazy talk, but who doesn't want to see this flick. Every internet junkie and videogamer will be there opening night, and even the girls will want to see it. Look at the last girl power flick...Charlie's Angels. Expect HUGE THINGS!

-I believe that Heath Ledger needs death...that's all.

Upcoming Movie Spoiler...

-We have some news (from FilmForce.IGN.com) about the upcoming Planet of the Apes. It's not too juicy, but it tells the basic premise of the movie: (highlight following to view)

- 2029, somewhere in our solar system the spaceship USAF Oberon is gathering up scientific information. Pilot Leo Davidson ('Marky' Mark Wahlberg) is training apes to helm space pods missions. His latest protégé, the lovable Pericles, disappears during a mission in an electromagnetic storm. Leo, our talented hero, tries to rescue the missing chimp. He loses control of his pod and crash lands on a planet. You know the rest... Apes are in control and humans are their slaves. Leo is captured by apes alongside human tribe leader Karubi (Kris Kristofferson) and his hottie daughter Daena (Estella Warren). Ape trader Limbo (Paul Giamatti) sells Daena and Leo to human-friendly Ari (Helena Bonham-Carter), who's father is a Senator (David Warner). The humans and Ari escape to a mysterious ancient city. On their trail is the evil General Thade (Tim Roth) and his right-hand ape Captain Attar (Michael Clarke Duncan) who want to destroy the human rebellion once and for all.

10 Movies I WANT TO SEE NOW!!!!

1.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

Damnit! I need to see this movie now! Forget American Pie 2, this will easily be the funniest film of 2001.
2. Planet of the Apes Does Tim Burton ever disappoint? Watch Batman over again and tell me you can't wait to see how Burton handles this huge franchise.
3. Tomb Raider You all want to see it because of Angelina Jolie...admit it. And with Indiana Jones type action and CGI from hell...who isn't sold?
4. The Score Do I even need to say anything?
5. Jurassic Park 3 I'm kinda iffy about this one, after JP2 and Godzilla I'm kinda burnt on the monster genre...but I've got some hope left.
6. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon I still haven't seen this damn movie. I don't know what's wrong with me, but as soon as this one comes out Tuesday...I will be viewing it..naked. Huh? Beats me, just sounded like a good idea.
7. Swordfish I just love flicks where Travolta is his badass self. He's done it all before...but I love it just as much every single time.
8. The Pledge Another film I missed in the theaters, but this serial killer thriller film looks too good not to mark out for. C'mon it's Jack.
9. Moulin Rogue Call me fruity, but I want to see this damn flick. All the positive reviews and abundance of eye candy have me marking out. Besides, it's about time I took my GF to a movie she might actually enjoy.
10. Pearl Harbor Sorry, but I haven't seen it..and am really not that excited to sit through 3 hours of it. But I'll eventually see it...cause well..I'm a movie mark. So sue me.

Recent Trailers...

House of 1000 Corpses - Click Here to View - This is the same trailer that has been out for quite a while now, but us Movie Marks have yet to mention this Rob Zombie horror flick and we need to. It's been delayed more times than Gamecube, but you need to check out the trailer. It's been a long time since we've had a true horror movie, and I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT! Rating: out of 4

Pinata - Click Here to View - Another horror movie trailer for you, yet this one is a lot less well-known. The only name that's involved is Jaime Pressley, and she's far from a HUGE star. Apparently this movie is about a demon that comes from within a pinata, sounds goofy and the trailer leaves alot to be desired.  Rating: out of 4

American Pie 2 - Click Here to View - I wasn't a huge fan of the first Pie. I loved it the first two times I saw it, but after that it just got annoying. This trailer shows very little, other than the fact that all the stars from the first film are returning, that and Jim's attempt at his second time. Looks like the rumors of Jim visiting band camp are true. This movie will make a mint, and I will be there but it looks like it has no chance of repeating the magic of the first one.   Rating: 1/2 out of 4

TOP 10 Most Powerful Movies NOW!

(based on recent awards, box office, rentals, etc.)

1.

Pearl Harbor

It didn't break all the records they hoped for, but this movie is everywhere and is going to make a ton of money for a very long time. Nearly every theater has this one playing on 2 screens or more...now that's power.
2. The Mummy Returns Pearl Harbor couldn't break it's record..now that's freaken amazing. Mummy Returns is still pulling 'em in and I don't see it losing any power...yet.
3. Shrek The kiddie film with all the barbs aimed at Disney. It's about time another studio had a HUGE animated film. It's still pulling in over $40 million a week...damn.
4. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon This week marks the DVD unleasing of Ang Lee's foreign film. Those that missed it in theaters will be all over this DVD. And even those that already saw it...will still buy it.
5. Traffic The war on drugs continues at Cockbuster Videos as this Oscar winner is now available to rent and own.
6. Moulin Rogue This 2 hour music video is ripping up in per screen averages and when it gets a full-on release it will be in the Top 3 on the charts...mark my words.
7. Memento As this film gets more and more screens, more and more people are singing it's praises. Me included. It's worth every good review....every single one.
8. Driven I have no desire to see this film, but it's still hanging around the Top 10, quite a feat for a movie with some of the worst reviews in recent memory.
9. Angel Eyes This movie didn't do the gross that JLo was certainly hoping for, but it's still doing solid business...but I don't think that will last.
10. Requiem for a Dream Aronofsky is a god...and people are finally recogonizing now that this flick is out on DVD. And it's about damn time.

Must See Movie that's Filming Now...

American Psycho 2 - The original is one of my favorite movies of all-time. Christian Bale made the first one, and of course he's not involved in this sequel. So why am I still marking out? Well, I just HAVE to see where they go with this one. Apparently the character of Bale isn't even going to be involved at all. Weird, huh? Rumor has it that William Shatner and Mila Kunis are involved. Will they bastardize the American Psycho name? Probably, but I still want to give it a look.

Where the hell is this DVD?...

Killer Clowns from Outer Space

[ Box Art ] Why?: I know you're thinking, what the hell is up with this one. But anyone who has seen this, has to consider it a classic. It's a horror movie that you will laugh the whole way through. Sure that's not what was intended...but whatever works. THIS DVD MUST BE MADE!

What We Would Greenlight...

Red Faction

bale.gif (17133 bytes)

snipes.gif (14751 bytes)

Yeah, I know this is a videogame and we already have quite a few games themed movies headed towards the big screen (Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil), but if you've played this game at all, you'd know it would make a great movie. To those that don't know of the game, the premise basically is: a company has promised fortune to those that help out on a mining operation on Mars. But what they don't know is that they will be all but enslaved. An uprising occurs and Red Faction is formed. The uprising, the plague that is striking down workers, and their attempt to escape would make a great movie.
Starring: Christian Bale (Parker), Wesley Snipes (Hendrix), etc. etc.

Director: Paul Verhoeven (from Total Recall)

Budget: $50 Million

Predicted Gross: $75 Million
