A Column by

Vigilante

Yeah, that's right. I, the movie mark, has returned yet again. First and foremost I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and I hope all of your holidays were merry and bright. This column would've been updated a long time ago, but I guess the tag teaming between Goc and I has ended. Now I am the sole movie mark. A very daunting task, but something I am more than prepared to take. So, without further ado. Let's dabble into the first edition of Movie Marks for 2002.

Recent News/Gossip....

-I know you've heard it, and it unfortunately is very true. Members of the pop group N'Sync will appear in the Geonosis scene in the upcoming "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones". Why? Who knows, but one only prays that they end up blown away with the likes of  Jar Jar Binks.

- Godly director Peter Jackson "Lord of the Rings", has hinted that the role of Arwen (Liv Tyler) will appear in the second film though in the books her character doesn't appear again till the third. Great...more stellar acting from the great Liv Tyler

-Michael Madsen of "Species" and the short-lived "Vengeance Unlimited" tv series has joined Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry to the yet untitled Bond 20.

-It appears that Miramax loved beating the shit out of a dead horse.  They have just greenlit a third "Scary Movie" flick entitled "Scary Movie 3: Episode 1 - Lord of the Brooms" with a production start date of March 2002 for release in the Fall. The story follows "an orphan who goes on a magical quest around the Earth and beyond to rid the world of evil" and will make fun of such titles as "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings".

-The Incredible Hulk has been given a tentative release date. The Hollywood Reporter announces that the action epic has set a June 20th 2003 release date, plonked right between "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Terminator 3".

-In an official release from FOX, the studio has confirmed it will be releasing the "X-Men" sequel under the title "X²" on May 2nd 2003 in the US. Principal photography is also set to start May 2002 with all the major cast and most of the major crew back. No word on which new characters will be introduced, but I'll keep you posted.

Vigilante's Top 10 Films of 2001

Movie

Summary

130276.gif (10611 bytes) Why? - As you can tell, the ratings are slightly off for this to be #1. But I am totally disregarding the rating system for this top 10 list. Lord of the Rings, by far, is the best film that has graced the screens this year. From acting, to suspense, to effects. This movie has something for all.

Why? - The movie that manages to bring a tear to Vigi's eye no matter how many times he views it. Nicole Kidman has caught me off guard this year, and has delivered two kick ass performances in two very different films. Rouge is the epitome of what all musicals wish to be. This film will own the Golden Globes.

Why? - Goc has been praising this film since the moment he laid eyes on it. It took me awhile to see it, but now that I have...I fully understand. This movie just oozes with flava. The backward moving storyline just keeps you wondering what the hell happened beforehand to get this man in his situation. Its beautifully directed, and needs to be seen by all who have missed it.

Why? - The movie that came out the gate firing, and then dropped off the face of the earth due to some really harsh reviews. I'm not sure why these reviews were so scathing, because this is without a doubt one of the top 5 films of the year. I do believe that the last 3rd of this film is a little too p.c., but not as bad as the end of "A.I." so it still remains at the head of the pack. Cruise acts his ass off!!!

Why? - Kidman does it again. This time with a dark/suspense vehicle under her spell. This film is deep, and truly needs to be seen twice to get the whole effect. But Nicole and those two kids make this film a must see in 2001.

039_HARRYPOAOS_DOUBLESIDED.jpg (37490 bytes) Why? - Yeah, I went for the hype. And unlike most things built by hype..it lived up for it. I loved this film from start to finish. That feeling you get after watching "Wizard of Oz" or "Neverending Story". A little too long for a kids flick, but I'm not a kid. So whatever.

039_MONSTERINC_2SIDED.jpg (34386 bytes) Why? - Another kids flick on the list, and this one gets the nod because it's Angel's fav. Plus...I have a particularly fondness of that little baby girl 'Boo'. She's so damn cute.

ai.jpg (6011 bytes) Why? - Kubric is probably turning in his grave at the awful ending Speilberg gave this film. If not, my heart is doing enough for him. Aside from he last 15 minutes of this film, this movie was perfect. To bad perfection is an oxymoron.

JeepersCreepers-B.jpg (22249 bytes) Why? - My guilty pleasure of the list. This movie scared the living f*ck out of me. The first half of this film had me damn near peeing on myself, and NOTHING has done that ever. The movie gets a little corny and off the wall when they let the audience see the villain..but the ending definitely makes up for it. Can't wait for that sequel

Hannibal-Regular.jpg (25406 bytes)

Why? - Gyeah.com got into it pretty big over this film when it was first released, and I was one of the few who enjoyed this film. I still stand behind it. Its a totally different film from SoL, but that doesn't make it a bad thing.

Vigilante's Top 10 Bombs of 2001

Movie

Summary

poster3.jpg (119497 bytes) Why? - The big summer blockbuster also was the big summer dud. Though the movie made a ton of loot, the story of this movie had bombs as big as the villains within it. This movie sucked on so many levels, and people still loved it. Its the "Titanic" phenomena all over again.

Planet-of-the-Apes_C.jpg (11534 bytes) Why? - Another big summer piece of crap. Tim Burton is allowed to have mistakes, and I guess this was his. The film lacked any real substance and was a big pile of boredom.

131766.gif (8880 bytes) Why? - Do I really need to justify this with an answer. Mariah goes from rags to riches, then realizes that the riches aren't all they are cracked out to be. After seeing this film, I understand why she went into a mental breakdown.

BabyBoy.jpg (55960 bytes) Why? - "Baby Boy" was a film that just started off wrong. From the film's first image, to the continuous & unnecessary use of sex...this movie did nothing to bring John Singleton to a new level of his craft. In fact, this movie is more like the third Friday.

DomesticDisturbance.jpg (4897 bytes) Why? - A made for tv movie that got the greenlight to the big screen cause Travolta thought it would be an improvement over "Battlefield Earth". It is, but not much.

131798.gif (6487 bytes) Why? - Chris Kattan? He's barely tolerable on SNL...an entire movie with his little ass. Good lord no.

freddy.gif (8250 bytes) Why? - Tom Green is not funny. Never has been. He got his humor from the reactions he received from other people. In this movie...all of these reactions weren't real. They were acted. Which made this movie just DUMB and completely useless to film. Like his marriage, Green's career is over.

TheScore.jpg (15085 bytes) Why? - So many things wrong with this film. Bad pace, waste of actors (Basset and Deniro), and no original bone in its body. This film was one huge set up piece to something that everyone saw coming a mile away.

animal.gif (9206 bytes) Why? - Working at a movie theatre this past summer left me with some time to check out movies I would never actually spend money on. This is one of them, and I would suggest that no one else does either. Of course....as fast as this film came and went. It seems you all knew to do that anyway.

Predictions

-Lord of the Rings is riding high now, and I can't see anything worthwhile knocking it down. The only way that beast is losing #1 is if people just get tired of going to the show and seeing it. I'm at my third time, and I'm still not tired yet.

-Arnold Schwarzenegger's movie is FINALLY going to be released. Let's hope to God nothing else catastrophic happens to the world, or else this man's going to go into shock.

- Halle Berry is making quite the little name for herself. "Monster's Ball" is getting great critical praise, and now she gets the chance to do TWO blockbuster films in the yet untitled Bond 20, and the sequel to "X-men".

-Lucas will learn by all the fires set outside of Skywalker ranch, that there are just some things you can't do with the coveted Star Wars franchise.

Upcoming Movie Spoiler...

-This little spoiler is still in rumor stages, but it is in reference to a possible sequel to the last Hannibal Lector film. Highlight the text below if you're interested. (News comes from Chud.com)

It seems director Ridley Scott isn't finished with the character, if what Winston tells us is to be believed. Scott has reportedly discussed the subject with producer Dino DeLaurentiis for a potential "Hannibal Returns", and additionally Anthony Hopkins has met with screenwriter Steve Zaillian about where they'd like to possibly take the character. Another report claims that the film would be told in flashbacks and feature FBI Agent Starling hunting a different serial killer.

10 Movies I WANT TO SEE NOW!!!!

1.

The Two Towers

After seeing "Fellowship of the Ring", how can this not be the first film.
2. Star Wars: Attack of the Clones The trailers kicked ass, but the recent news has kind of made me weary as to what the hell Lucas is doing with this film again.
3. Monster's Ball This film has been released in some city's. Unfortunately, mine isn't one of them. This movie has been getting praises all across the board, and I want to see what all the hub bub is about.
4. A Beautiful Mind Russell Crowe and Ron Howard have made a film where you watch someone act? In Hollywood? Oh my Lord.  I have to see this.
5. Spiderman I'm still not a fan of the Green Goblin outfit, but I can't help but get really wet below the belt when viewing that new trailer. Maybe we can have two great comic movies back to back.
6. Minority Report Spieldberg gets the chance to make up for his ass fucking of "A.I."with everyone's favorite baby face Tom Cruise. The concept kicks ass, and should be interesting part of this summer.
7. Confessions of A Dangerous Mind Clooney gets a chance to get behind the camera and in front of it. Man I'm all over this like b3 on Florida Collegiate Football.
8. Queen of the Damned From the reviews, this movie is a mixed bag. But the trailer looks pretty cool, plus its my girl Aaliyah's last film..and she looks like a total bad ass.
9. Blade 2 That first trailer left a lot to be desired, but from what I've heard. This Blade blows the original out of the damn water. I can't wait.
10. Insomnia Director of Memento, with Soderbergh as producer, and Al Pacino as an actor. What else does one need?

Recent Trailers...

Blade 2 - Click Here to View -   Not really sure what to do with this teaser trailer. It gives me some nice little eye candy, but it does it so fast and recklessly that it fails to get me hype about it. It just makes me question what I just saw. I hope there is a newer trailer coming fast. Rating: out of 4

8 Mile - Click Here to View - Eminem's previously untitled film gets both a title and a trailer at the same time. This quasi-bio flick stars Eminem as a young rapper that tries to use his talent as a way to deal with all the anger in his life. This trailer holds some dark edge to it, and shows that Em may have some acting abilities in that frame of his. Plus, the scenery of Detroit and the new Em track in the background put this one over the top for me..  Rating: out of 4

Queen of the Damned - Click Here to View - The trailer for Aaliyah's last film, and this one packs some punch. Not sure what vibe this film is going for, but its much different than the dramatic approach of "Interview with a Vampire". This film has a more demonic/new age feel to it. And I like it. Aaliyah could suck my blood anytime.   Rating: out of 4

Spiderman - Click Here to View - This is how a movie trailer is supposed to be done. A beginning exposition, a middle, and then a climactic and kick ass ending that leaves the audience in awe. This trailer does that, and though I still have doubts about certain aspects of this movie, after seeing this trailer. Those doubts seem to fade into oblivion.            Rating: out of 4

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones - Click Here to View - After two previous trailers, Lucas drops a third consecutive bomb on us. And this one (dubbed "Forbidden Love") is the kicker. This trailer uses the Princess Leia/Solo love theme from before, which (for any SW fan) invokes a sudden emotion. Therefore, this trailer has to be the most emotional and gripping trailer out of all the Star Wars Prequel trailers. The tone of this trailer is dark, and shows glimpses of the arch of which Anakin begins and ends with. This trailer has me putting faith back in Lucas.

TOP 10 Most Powerful Movies NOW!

(based on recent awards, box office, rentals, etc.)

1.

Fellowship of the Ring

This cash cow has made the ENTIRE budget of the trilogy back in just 10 days. And it has received a nomination for film of the year at the Globes.
2. Moulin Rouge I hate to say I told you so...but. Golden Globe nominations up the ass,and the dvd just dropped. This movie has just earned some serious legs.
3. Harry Potter The new king of the box office for 2001. It just took the record from Shrek @ the end of the yeah.
4. A Beautiful Mind Ron Howard seems to keep the directing hits coming. This time he's got Russel Crowe to show off his vehicle.
5. Ocean's 11 These stars have some staying power. With the new film Ali getting much hype, Ocean's 11 managed to keep that film at and stay at the spot above it. Go head gang.
6. Ali The film wasn't all it was cracked up to be, but Will Smith was damn good. He doesn't deserve an award..but its good for him to be nominated at least.
7. Monster's Ball The film is getting recognition with just about every critic  in the world.
8. Mullholund Drive A couple of Globe nominations thrown its wat, and this film is on the lips of quite of few people in the world.
9. Shrek This movie made way too much money this year. And is now causing more damage on DVD. Will the madness ever stop?! NOOOOOOOOO!!!
10. The Others Nicole Kidman gets a nomination twice at the Globes? Man...I  thought I was the only one who saw how great she was this year.

Must See Movie that's Filming Now...

Insomnia - Charles Nolan, director of "Memento", is doing a remake of a 1997 Norwegian thriller titled "Insomnia". The American version is being produced by Steve Soderbergh ("Out of Sight", "Traffic", "Ocean's 11"). The film stars Al Pacino as the protagonist Will Domer, and Robin Williams as the films antagonist (Walter). Hilary Swank also stars. The film drops May 24th, 2002

Where the hell is this DVD?...

Star Wars: Prequels

Star.gif (5337 bytes) Why?: Lucas, you've dicked us around for long enough. You released a kick ass dvd set to a very mediocre flick. How about you give that wonderful time and dedication to films that are actually worth a damn. We want the original trilogy, and we want that bastard now.

What We Would Greenlight...

Max Payne

Pearce.gif (16565 bytes)

The Pc game turned Xbox/ps2 game has been well received by all. And though it is basically a movie on a console, it would be very interesting to see this game made into a bad ass live action flick. Think Matrix special effects meets a balls to the walls action flick the likes of "Die Hard". The question is who would you get to direct, and who would be the wise ass man...Max Payne?
Starring: Guy Pearce (Max Payne)

Director: John Woo (from Face Off, Hard Target)

Budget: $55 Million

Predicted Gross: $80 Million

Well that's all for Issue #5 of Movie Marks, I hope you enjoyed my take on these films, and if you have any comments/ feedback/ questions/ arguments please email 'em to movies@gyeah.com. In 2002, these bastards will be coming out on a monthly basis. So keep you eyes open....I'll be back in Feb.

-Now that you've read something, he's written. Wouldn't you like to find out more about Vigilante? Here You Go.
