Welcome to the First Edition of WATCH THIS MOVIE
DAMNIT! A column that will be written whenever I come across a movie that I feel every one
of you owes it to yourself to watch. These movies will be ones that make it under the
radar but are definitely deserving of a viewing. You're not going to find any big budget
blockbusters here, that's for sure.
The
first movie I'm focusing on is a documentary entitled, American Movie. About a year or so
ago I was wandering around Hollywood Video and came across the box for a low budget
documentary. The cover got my attention as two apparently different-looking fellows were
gracing the cover. In a sea of pretty ass faces like George Clooney and Cameron Diaz and
others, this box stuck out. Well needless to say I had to rent it.
-The
stars of American Movie, Mark Borchardt and Mike Schank.-
The story
of American Movie is this: Mark Borchardt is an independent film maker, specifically of
horror movies. Since a kid he has made bootleg slasher movies with his friends. American
Movie follows him through his biggest attempt to date, the 20 minute COVEN! The movie
follows the extremely vocal Mark through the shooting of Coven, his struggle to get
funding, and many cases of beer.

-The
stars of Coven. That old guy is way too creepy for words-
At first glance, I know
you're thinking, I don't want to watch this garbage, it looks like two goofballs in lawn
chairs. But as different as Mark seems, he has a way with his words that could rival
anyone. If this guy sold used cars, I would own sixteen broken down Chevy Novas. The way
he talks money out of his aging uncle (may he rest in peace) must be watched to be
believed. And the way he gets actor's from around the community to feel what he feels, is
amazing. If I was in Wisconsin, I know I'd be doing whatever Mark wanted me to do.

-Mark
and his uncle, the money man behind Coven. Believe it or Not?-
I don't really want to say much more about this movie. I'd rather you watch it for
yourself. Every second that Mark's best friend Mike Schank is on the screen ensures
classic comedy and quotes. But I'm not going to spoil Mike Schank for you, thats for sure.
I also don't want to spoil any of the great dialogue, but here's just a little to give you
an idea:
-Some Quotes from American Movie:
"I was a failure,
and I get very sad and depressed about that....Now I'm back to being Mark who has a beer
in his hand and is thinking about the great American script, the great American movie. And
this time I cannot fail. I won't fail, its not in me."
"He's pretty tall
and crazy looking. I liked it."
"We've got mad man
putting scarecrows up front. God knows why, they've got no pragmatic purpose to the show.
But I like to keep the troops motivated. Idle hands are known to be the devil's
workshop."
"We've got people
walking around, I wish I could give them destinys."
"We used to do alot
of partying before, but I don't party anymore. Ha."
"There's some corny
dialogue that would make the pope weep."
"He's best suited
for working in a factory maybe."
"Last night man I
was so drunk, I was calling Moracco man, trying to get to the Hotel Hilton at Tangiers in
Casablanca. That's pathetic man. Is that what you wanta do with your life man. Suck down
Peppermint Schnapps and try to call Morocco at 2 in the morning. That's senseless. But
that's what happens."
"I was smoking dope
and drinking beer and it really struck me I was no longer paying attention to the actor's
and the performances....I realized I was no longer a director. There were stilted
performances and I did nothing to rectify the situation."
"Kick fucking ass, I
got a mastercard. Life is kinda cool sometimes."
-Life is kinda
cool sometimes, especially when you're watching American Movie. Its more than just a funny
as hell documentary, its really uplifting, it makes everyone want to give their dream a
shot. You'll laugh and get inspired all in an hour and a half.
