Welcome to the Second Edition of WATCH THIS MOVIE DAMNIT! A column that will be written whenever I come across a movie that I feel every one of you owes it to yourself to watch. These movies will be ones that make it under the radar but are definitely deserving of a viewing. You're not going to find any big budget blockbusters here, that's for sure. The first movie I focused on was American Movie, and I'm back again with another movie with "American" in the title, American Psycho. I don't want to start a cycle here, I promise this will be the last "American" movie. There was just no way I could let this column go on any longer without pushing this flick on you...
-Looks like a love story, don't it? Blood, guts what more do you need?- The story of American Psycho centers around the life of one Patrick Bateman. The film is set in the 80's culture, where greed runs rampant. Bateman is a child of this time and he's obsessed with fashion, gadgets, sex, and "fitting in." But Batemans not all there in the head...if you know what I mean...
-"I have to return some videotapes...and ummm, this axe too."- In between his massive workouts (worth the price of admission alone) and his rants on 80's music, something is taking Bateman over. Something is growing inside him, something evil..something that wants out.
-This Ol' Bloody Ass House, with Bob Vila and Pat Bateman- Bateman is disgusted with the world around him, and "American Psycho," tells his story as he tries to come to grips with the hate inside of him. This isn't some hack and slash no-brainer. Sure it has it's share of blood and gore, but that's not what this movie is about. American Psycho is about thinking beyond the box and being sucked into a character like you never have been before. As easy as it would be to hate Patrick Bateman, you won't even think about it. That's the beauty of American Psycho, it has the single greatest character I've ever witnessed and it makes you think. What more could you want? Want something more to entice you, well (as always) here's some choice quotes:

"Marcus and I go to the same barber, although I have a slightly better haircut." "Get a god damn job Al!" One Part of me wants to take her out and talk to her, be real sweet to her. The other part wants to know what her head would look like on a stick." "I have all the characteristics of a human being, flesh, blood, skin, hair, but not a single clear identifiable emotion except for greed and disgust."
