| Yes, folks its true!
Yet another birthday of mine has passed (April 2nd to be exact) and I'm still trying to
figure out its significance. I mean I realize its a celebration of the day you were born,
but its time for me to lay down my cynical view. First I must pose the question: At which number do birthdays actually
become a bad thing? I'm guessing not the following ages:
14
-b/c You can get your learner's permit.
16
-b/c You can drive (without your parents).
18
-b/c Now you can chew, and smoke, although a person can make a good argument that the
downfall begins here due to the fact that you can now be charged with things like
statutory rape.
20
-b/c You're not a teenager anymore and you are now 1 year away from the most over rated
birthday ever (see 21 for reason why)
21
-b/c Drinking just isn't as fun as it used to be! Sure it may taste better now, but like
you haven't been doing it for at least 4 years already.
At this point many people would argue that life hasn't even started yet, for those people
I say denial aint just a river in Egypt! Outside of tax cuts and being able to rent a car
at age 25 please inform me what is so attractive about what is to come. People will argue
that marriage, family, and retirement will be far better than anything listed above, and I
believe that's true, lets just consider the downside for a moment though. This might not
hit those of you in high school or even those of you in college as much as it will
everyone else, I must admit myself that this never weighed heavily on my thoughts until
after college.
First of all count the number of people you personally know
that died of "old age". That's what I thought! Getting old is a bitch, and
everyone knows this and has real life experiences with this. When I think of all the
doctors and hospital time that comes with age it makes me sick to my stomach. All the
cancers; testicular, cervical, lymphoma, skin, it makes me wonder if anyone dies of
anything other than cancer. Think about all of the people who are requiring assistance
right now to take a bath, change their diaper, and take a shit and KNOW, that they are
someone's parent, someone's aunt, and someone's brother. Think of words like arthritis and
muscle deterioration. Its not so much a fear of death as a fear of suffering that I have.
Its also not for me alone, but for my friends, family, and others I know and love. I
didn't mean to get this serious when I started writing this article but I have a rule of
thumb that you always mean the most in what you write and say first. Remember all
those times you would say to your parents, "man I can't wait til I get to high
school" and then "man I can't wait til I get to college" and then "man
I can't wait to be done with college". My parents would always tell me to NEVER,
EVER, WISH AWAY TIME, because before you know it that stage of your life will be gone and
you'll never be able to get it back.
......uhh, I guess that's it for now......... |
