Last night, was the
2001 The Source Magazine Hip-Hop Awards. As many of you know, The Source is the pinnacle
of hip hop music magazines. I've been a long time subscriber of The Source, but recently
I've had some problems with the magazine. Their refusal to review any Eminem CDs, their
recent love of Nelly, and some questionable CD reviews (Made Men, P Diddy, D12) have
caused me to hate the magazine that I once loved. I expected The Source Awards to silence
some of my hate, but they just proceeded to piss me off even more. The Awards will be
televised August 28th on UPN, without any violence this year...amazingly. But since the
event has already taken place, here are those that won:
Album of the Year
Nelly, Country Grammar
Artist of the Year/Solo
Jay-Z
New Artist of the Year
Nelly
Single of the Year
Ja Rule featuring Lil' Mo and Vita, "Put It on Me"
Artist of the Year/Group
Outkast
Producer of the Year
Neptunes
R&B Artist of the Year
R. Kelly
Live Performer of the Year
Outkast
Video of the Year
Eminem, "Stan"
Lyricist of the Year
Scarface
--Well, I'm sorry but I have some beef with many of the Award winners. So rather than just
bitch and moan, GYEAH.com and me (Goc) are going to crown our 2001 The Straight
Hip Hop Awards. I'm using the same categories and nominees from The Source
Awards, but this time the awards will go to those that actually DESERVE to win.
Well, here goes:
Lyricist of The Year
Eminem
Jay-Z
Scarface
Prodigy
Talib Kweli
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
SCARFACE, I'm honestly surprised that The Source actually crowned Scarface and personally
I have no complaints with this choice. Either Eminem or 'Face is equally deserving of the
crown.
Video of The Year
OutKast B.O.B.
(Director, Dave Meyers)
Eminem Stan
(Director, Philip Atwell & Dr. Dre)
Snoop Dogg Snoop Dogg
(Director, Chris Robinson)
De La Soul Ooh
(Director, Jeff Richter)
Lil Kim f/ Sisqo How Many Licks
(Director, Francis Lawrence)
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
EMINEM - STAN, Yet again, no bitching from me. This one is an obvious win, Stan was
a classic video that had more personality and originality than 100 hip hop videos put
together. I'm happy so far...but that won't last.
Live Performer of The
Year
Mystikal
OutKast
Snoop Dogg
Xzibit
Trick Daddy
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
SNOOP DOGG, The Source is all over Outkast's dicks these days, but I'm sorry but
I'm not amused by the former southernplayisticadillacfunkyf*cks. They're currently on
tour, with a non-rap tour. WTF? Moby is touring with Outkast...I'm not amused. Snoop Dogg
and the Up In Smoke Tour singing the classics with Dr. Dre is an obvious winner. The
biggest and best hip hop tour in history deserves to have one of it's members take this.
Period.
R&B Artist of The
Year
R. Kelly
Jill Scott
Carl Thomas
Musiq
Joe
THE STRAIGHT WINNER: NO
ONE, The Source is about hip hop, and that's it. You don't see the country music awards
giving Snoop Dogg some little award. I know that R&B albums are mentioned at the end
of each magazine, but it's hardly something worthy of an award.
Producer of The Year
The Neptunes
Dr. Dre
Rockwilder
Timbaland
Mannie Fresh
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
TIMBALAND, I know the Neptunes have had quite a few corny hits this year, but none
of them will stand the test of time. Dr. Dre was his usual dominating self (Emimen &
Xzibit's album are proof of that), and he should win this award every year, but to switch
it up I feel Timbaland is more than deserving. His work on Missy's album and even his
crossover hits with N'Sync & Aalyiah prove that Timba was the man this year, whether I
like it or not.
Artist of The Year, Group
OutKast
M.O.P
Wu-Tang Clan
Three 6 Mafia
Cash Money Millionaires
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
OUTKAST, I can't help but agree with The Source on this one, just because the
competition is so freaken weak. The Clan's most recent CD was a huge disappointment to say
the least and MOP didn't quite make enough noise..and the rest of the nominees are
straight shit. So Outkast win by default...big f-ing deal.
Single of The Year
Ja Rule Put It on Me
Mystikal Shake
Ya Ass
Eminem Stan
OutKast Ms. Jackson
Nelly Country Grammar
Ludacris Southern
Hospitality
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
LUDACRIS - SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY, I want to give this award to Eminem, but "The
Way I Am" is superior to Stan in my eyes as just a single. The rest of the choices
are just plain so annoying and so played out that 'Cris just wins by default. Ludacris
isn't really deserving of the single of the year, but of these choices, it's the one that
will still get you and your friends hyped...and you know it.
New Artist of The
Year
Nelly
Ludacris
Lil Bow Wow
Trina
Shyne
THE STRAIGHT WINNER: :
LUDACRIS, Aside from Shyne, it's amazing that the others even got nominated. Lil Bow Wow
isn't even an "artist." He writes about as much of his rhymes as I write Jay
Z's, meaning not a damn one. Tell the African American Aaron Carter to just go
die...please. Nelly should win a pop award, but not a hip hop one. Ludacris will be the
only one of these 5 who's still around next year, hence he deserves the award.
Artist of The Year, Solo
Jay-Z
Snoop Dogg
Ja Rule
Eminem
Eve
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
EMINEM, The Source might be afraid to award a white rapper the highest honor of
all, but thankfully I'm not. They might refuse to give him a review in their precious
magazine, but him not winning this award is a big pile of horseshit. What CD on this list
did you play the hardest? Which was the most thought-provoking? What caused the biggest
effect? Eminem, hands down.
Album of The Year
Eminem/The
Marshall Mathers LP
Jay-Z/The Dynasty: Roc La
Famillia
Snoop Dogg/Tha
Last Meal
OutKast/Stankonia
M.O.P/Warriorz
Nelly/Country Grammar
THE STRAIGHT WINNER:
EMINEM, The Artist of the Year or the Group of the Year is the only reasonable
choice to win this highest honor. How could you lose in Artist of the Year, while having
the winning album? It just makes no damn sense. The Source awards system is way out of
whack, they need to get some more interesting awards like best collaboration, best
soundtrack, best party song, most impressive produced album, best female artist, best
label, etc. etc. Let's innovate, instead of just trying to make the big boys happy with
the same award with 3 different names. Eminem had the best CD of the year and was the
artist of the year, there's no way around it.
--Well, that's it for The Straight Awards, as you can see the most deserving won the
awards, so you should have no reason to confuse them with The Source Awards. Word?
