Best and Worst Movies of 2000.

A Story by

Vigilante

Well, the year 2000 is over. There were tons of films this year, and most of the were just mediocre or very bad. In fact, the majority of the movies that were peices of cow dung made plenty of cash and those that didn't do too well at the box office are the greatest films of the year. Damn Americans!! Anyway, these are the films I feel are the best and worst of 2000... (Note: Movies such as "Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon",  are in limited release now, and I have not had the chance to see them. So IF it were to make this top ten list, they won't be on there now. It will, in turn, be on the 2001 list if it needs to be.)

Top 10 Best Movies of 2000

#10.

Erin.B Erin Brockovich -  This is hands down Julia Robert's best acting perfomance since "Steel Magnolias". The story of a single mother of three trying to fight for people of a small town who are being affected negatively by a huge and powerful company. Steve Sodenberg is on a roll with "Out of Sight", this film, and "Traffic" coming next year. He is one of the few directors whose movies will be enjoyed by film lovers of all ages.
(Julia Roberts: Golden Globe "Best Actress in a Drama")

#9.

Perfect Storm Perfect Storm - This movie shows that American's still have some class. This movie is perfect, and without telling too much for those that heven't seen it, shows that movies of this kind still have a place in the world. A true heart turner and tear jerker to anyone with a heart.

#8.

American Psycho American Psycho -  Heh...this movie was panned by critics. One of those critics slobbed the knob of Jennifer Lopez's horrible "The Cell". I think ol Ebert needs to back up from the table, and head back to film school. This movie is going down as a cult classic, but is much more than that. One of the best book to movie translations known to man, and shows the inside of a madman's head brilliantly. Christian Bale was perfect here.

#7.

WayoftheGun The Way of the Gun - Another one of the great films this year, that was just passed through the cracks. WotG, next to Nurse Betty, is the best written film this year. The breathtaking story matched by suttle character acting, and gun fights that leave leave you amazed. This is definately a film that should not be missed.

#6.

Hurricane The Hurricane - Had Kevin Spacey's perfomance in "American Beauty" not come up against Denzel Washington's performance here in this film...Mr. Washington would have had this one hands down. The story of Rubin Carter is masterfully depicted, and Denzel gives the best perfomance of his career. A very powerful film.
(Denzel Washington: Golden Globe '99 "Best Actor  in a Film").

#5.

X-men X-men - Finally, the Hollywood bastards can make a great comic book movie without completely butt f'ning the entire thing the comic stood for. Thanks to Bryan Singer, "X-men" is not just a movie about mutants from a comic book...but a real movie about people who are ostracized from society because they're a little different. This film should be watched by both fans and non fans.

#4.

Gladiator Gladiator - Russell Crowe is a GOD!!! This movie is a man's epic film, with the story of Maximus's fall and rise to gain revenge for the loss of his loved one. This movie has the heart, story, action, acting, and sets to make it a timeless classic. (Gladiator: Golden Globe "Best Film:Drama"

#3.

Oh Brother O Brother Where Art Thou? - Clooney's second movie on my 2000 list, and the better of the two. This time George hooks up with the Coen brothers to create one of the funniest adventure films in years. This is just one of the great films that leaves you laughing hysterically, and trembling with that warm feeling of satisfaction. (George Clooney: Golden Globe Winner "Best Actor in a Comedy Film")

#2.

Nurse Betty Nurse Betty -  Never before have I left a movie theatre with so much appreciation for film making, and not ONE bad thing to say about a movie. This movie is perfectly acted, written, and delivered and shows that somewhere under all that B.S..the movie industry still has a few great films under its belt. (Rene Zellwegger: Golden Globe Winner "Best Actress in a Comedy Film")

#1.

Traffic Traffic - Without a doubt, this movie wins top billing for 2000 for me. The most emotinal film of the year, as Soderbergh gets another film on my list. I have never left a theatre with so many thoughts and emotions going through my head. If you enjoy films, then you owe it to youself to see this movie. (Benecio Del Torro: Golden Globe Winner "Best Supporting Actor in a Drama")

Honorable Mentions
:

Scream 3 - This movie is the best of the series, but was seriously downplayed because it was the third of a downhill franchise. Closed the series on a great note, and nice to see a more adult and smarter plot being used...especially after the huge chunks of manuer known as Scream 2.

Titan AE
- Dark cartoon aimed at an adult audience? Doomed from the beginning really, but a very very good film. I wish this movie had gotten the respect it deserved, cause quite frankly was the greatest sci fi movie in a few years.

Final Destination - Perhaps the most intense opening sequence in movie history, followed by some very original and unexpected ways of killing people off. Unfortunately, towards the end of the film things become a little routine to most horror movies. Fortunately, the ending make up for more than enough of that and makes this film one of the most intense roller coaster rides of the year.

Frequency - I'm not sure if many people saw this movie, but it is really worth you going to rent it. A psychological/supernatural/drama that is both creepy and hits close enough to home. Imagine Ghost meeting back to the future, and you are just scratching the surface of this film.

Charlie's Angels - Just pure popcorn fun. Three beautiful women (well two and Drew Barrymore), great (but farfetched)action, and a perfect blend of tounge and cheek humor make this movie great for both males and females.

-And now on to the movies you all saw, and now wish it was ok to kill unecessary celebrities.

Top 10 Worst Movies of 2000

Rank

Movie Description:

#10.

Gone in Sixty Seconds - Gone in 60 Seconds: I wish this movie lasted as long as the title says. Loud film with sub par acting, and a plot that my nieces and nephews created during nap time. Agenlina Jolie looks good though.

#9.

Reindeer Games - Ben Affleck, like Gwyneth Paltrow said in so many words, has a tendency to do films that don't test any of his acting skills. Well, this is yet another film that, well, does nothing for his skills nor Charlize Theron or Gary Sinise. This is a badly written action film done horribly.

#8.

The Cell - Roger Ebert needs to be shot several times in the head for recommending this film to anyone. This movie is bad, top to bottom. It looks nice, but the plot is routine and so horribly put together that you would rather be watching Brendan Fraser and Keanu Reeves have a discussion of minds.

#7.

Scary Movie - The only thing Scary about this movie, is that there are tons of stupid ass americans who are willing to pay money to see people make tons of crude fart jokes and various other things that aren't funny. If you're so interested in this type of film, all you have to do is take a dump in the toilet, don't flush it, and ram your face in the toilet. You get the same effect that this film gives you, and you get it for free.

#6.

What Lies Beneath - I actually enjoyed this movie..the first half that is. The second half...man...how can I explain this. Its like going to a party drunk as hell, pulling some girl, and having wild passionate sex with her. THen you wake up the next morning, look at her, and you see that she's a cross between the female gremlin and the ugly version of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The adult thriller it was going for became a typical horror film, with a very unrealistic ending making everything it had done correctly go straight to the crapper.

#5.

Urban Legends: Final Cut - Strange? A movie called Urban Legends 2 without the use of Urban Legends. I know horror movies shouldn't really be judged that hard, but this film blows. Bad acting, plot devlopment, and cheap way of pulling a killer out the crack of their ass..even for a horror movie. I think if it weren't for "Final Destination" and "Scream 3", this movie would have placed the final nail in the coffin of the teen horror genre.

#4.

The Klumps - Why is Eddie Murhpy still making movies? I mean seriously, when was the last time he had an enjoyable movie. Nutty Professor one was a bunch of ish, Dr. Dolittle...more ish, Vampire in Brooklyn, Metro..the amount of B.S. continues on forever. Its like this guy lives off of laxatives. Well, this movie just follow suits with his trend with more jokes using farts and other things that aren't funny.

#3.

Pitch Black - What the hell was this?!?! USA Films should have the right to create any film..rather it be tv of for cinema..revoked and burned. Vin Diesel's great perfomance here is wasted on a boring, pointless, and brain dead sci fi film that belongs in the eternal hell of forgetable sci fi films...right along with the dumbasses that liked it.

#2.

Vertical Limit - I would like to take Chris O'Donnell's life. Simple as that. "Batman and Robin", "Bachelor", and now this piece of crap. I want his head on a mantle for yet another horribly acted, bad paced, and overall just un-enjoyable "man vs. nature" film. In fact, if you see Mr. O' Donnell in a street somewhere..just sock him in the jaw. It would be a great service for the people of film making.

#1.

Battlefield Earth - God damn this movie blew harder then a New York Prostitute working her way to getting a new car. Plot Holes the size of the space in President Bush's Head, horrid acting, and laughable plot make you take a steel pipe to the back of Travolta's head. Then, once he's unconscious tie him up and make him watch the piece of ish he's created...you know the old "rubbing your face in your own shit method."

And so, 2000 is officially in the books. This year, compared to 99 was a very bad one for the movie industry. There were very few films out of the many that were released that were entertaining or groundbraking. No, isntead there were more thoughtless, mediocre, and money wasting films that crowded the 2000 year. I seriously hope 2001 returns us to the way 1999 was, and here are a few films that I think one should keep their eye out for in this new year.
