A
few months back, two GYEAH.com staff members engaged in a war of opinions concerning
Microsoft's upcoming Xbox console. Opinions may have changed, but the chat transcript
still proves to be an interesting read. So with that said, here is Nemesis and The Goc
arguing both sides of the Xbox debate. Sit back, and check out the Xbox Xchange, expect an
updated one with new participants in the near future. Enjoy..
To get them started, Nemesis
was asked why he's for Xbox, from there, there's no boundaries...
Nemesis
(supporting Xbox): I want an American company making games so not everything in the
video game industry originates from a foreign company.
Goc (against Xbox): Microsoft is just making
the console. They're shady at game making. Age of Empires is their only straight game.
Nemesis: Flight Simulator? Mech Warrior?
Goc : Flight simulator...boring. And
Mechwarrior was made by Activision.
Nemesis: You sure? I think Microsoft
had something to do with it, as well.
Goc : Positive, I owned two of the
Mechwarrior series, 1 & 2.
Nemesis : How many games did Sony make
before they had released the Playstation? Fools dismiss Xbox for silly reasons...and
before it has even come out.
Goc : I dont dismiss Xbox, I just skat on
its high price. I feel consoles should be 200 bucks....period. Sony is a still shady
videogame company. Nintendo & Sega are iconish first parties. Their Japanese
based....so be it.
Nemesis: The argument that Microsoft doesn't
know games... foolish. Nintendo and Sega had to start out at some point, as well. Making
games isn't exactly quantum physics, either. Many fools think Microsoft making games is
something like Toyota going into the fast food business.
Goc : Mario 64, WaveRace, Shenmue,
Metal Gear, Final Fantasy every great company has its great franchises. Where's Microsoft?
Age of Empires is its closest thing to one, which isn't developed in house by Microsoft I
might add. And who's to say this real time strategy should even be on a console.
Nemesis : In 1984 ... how big of a franchise
was Nintendo's Mario?
Goc : You say Microsoft just needs time,
well they've been in the computer industry and making games since the shady MS-DOS. How
much longer does Slick Willy need?
Nemesis : They don't need time, or anything
of the sort. You judge Microsoft by the game franchises it doesn't yet possess. You can't
presume to know Microsoft doesn't have the ability to put out good games until they've
actually released the system.
Goc : The PC has always been considered a
video gaming system. A system which MSoft knows more about than anyone, considering they
produce the OS and Direct X. Yet what have they done in the last 5 years in the PC Gaming
industry? Considering they're the closest thing the industry has to a first party, they
should be miles ahead of the competition. Instead they rip off games like Command &
Conquer and Ultima: Online. Disgusting.
Nemesis: I suppose if Microsoft thought it
was worth dedicating so much effort to developing PC games, then they wouldn't have gone
about releasing a console?
Nemesis: Flight Simulator = probably
could classify as a franchise of some sort. It's been around quite awhile and is
enormously popular. Their golf game = Links attracted quite a following.
Goc: Your=dodging the question Brad. The
reason I don't want a system from Microsoft, is the same reason I hate Sony. Games aren't
their #1 priority. With Sega and Nintendo, you knew videogames were #1! I just don't get
the same feeling with these huge corporations that make anything under the sun.
Nemesis: Huge corporations? Nintendo and
Sega aren't exactly ma and pop operations.
Goc: You dodge the question like shooks
dodges low fat food. If PS2 fails, Sony can just sell you 800 other electronic devices. If
Xbox falters, Gates has Windows and the Office Suite to shove down your throat. What if
Sega and Nintendo fail? They're f-ed. They put everything into their systems, because they
are everything. They built the market that Sony and MSoft just want to step into. Its
bullsh*t and you know it.
Nemesis: Goc has problems with the structure
of capitalism. It's called competition. Those who make the best system and games will be
rewarded. I think its comedy that Nintendo now finds themselves going up against
Microsoft, two companies who've been accused of monopolistic behavior in the past.
But if Microsoft can't put out good games as everyone says they can't, Nintendo shouldn't
have any problems with Gates and crew, right?
Goc: No, you're wrong with that assumption.
Gates has the power to buy up any developers he needs, hence giving them the illusion of
first party software. The rest of the developers will just come flocking, because
Microsoft has the power that they do. Its just like Sony, horrible first party software,
but they get the third party support to make it. If Nintendo and Sega had companies like
EA at launch, the market would look alot different today.
Nemesis: You don't think Gates would resort
to the sort of tactics Nintendo used to attempt to extend the life of the NES, now would
you?
Goc: What tactics do you mean?
Nemesis: Consolidating game developers to
the extent that other systems have very little support to develop games for their systems.
Nintendo = busted for it. Nintendo used this in such a way that they strong armed retail
stores to carry their systems and their games to stifle competition. Price fixing also was
rampant Thus, feeling bad for Nintendo because of the "corporate" invasion is
almost comical.
Due to time constraints, both
sides were asked at this point to voice their final thoughts...
Final Thoughts:
Nemesis:
People cry about Gates' money, but he can't possibly buy up all ideas and power, if he
could, he'd be King of the Earth. As I stated, Microsoft = an American company.
More often than not, games are developed for Japanese people foremost. Thus, with
Microsoft designing games for Americans, the most powerful nation in the world should be
rewarded.
Goc: But at what price? The death of those
that started the industry? Sega is already out of the game. The company that innovated
with Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, and interesting controllers. I just wish that most
innovative companies got a shot...not those with the biggest pocketbooks. Now that
videogames are a big industry, Sony and Microsoft want a piece of the pie. Nintendo and
Sega have been down since day one, and we shouldn't ever forget that. Your parents loved
you no matter what, even when you sh*t your pants. No say some millionaire offers you a
million bucks to become his son. Would you sell out?
-What side are you on? Are you ready to embrace
a new age of gaming with Microsoft's Xbox? Or do you piss on Bill Gates trying to
overpower his way into your living room? Voice your opinion on the...
