Things that F*ck With Your Mind!

A Top 5 List by

Benzine

Through the years I've been alive, I've learned and seen many things that caused me to question the many other things that I've accepted as truth. The mere thought of these things ignites the flames of debate within your mind. These things are far deeper than the whole "What came first, the chicken or the egg" idea. So sit back and enjoy the article, cuz afterwards you may not be able to think about much else than some of these things that f*ck with your mind.

This is a rather short list, because many things do have an explanation, but the items on this list do not. First off, I put an item that has caused enough confusion to be noted, but not quite enough to make it into the top 5. Well, with out further ado, I present the runner-up and the top five "Things that F*ck With Your Mind".

pyramid.jpg (14004 bytes) Pyramids - Some don't think there is much mystery surrounding the pyramids of Egypt or South America, but I'm not just talking about the Egyptian or South American pyramids separately, I'm talking about them collectively. The question that will spark your thought process is, why did two cultures thousands of miles and an entire ocean apart, build structures that are so similar? Some people think it is just a coincidence, others think that perhaps a member from one civilization somehow made it to the other bringing with them, the knowledge of pyramid building. To the rest of us, the reasons for the similarities are endless and the cause of much confusion, which is why this is on the list.

#5.

cameron_diaz.jpg (6767 bytes) Women - Sure, this isn't a deep philosophical or scientific question, but you can't tell me you've never ever been completely and utterly confused about women and experienced an occasion with a woman where you wondered, "Is she trying to mess with my mind?" On second thought, maybe this is a philosophical or scientific question. What do women want, and why do women yell at men, when the man has done nothing wrong? That is just the beginning of a very long list of questions that men have about women, and I'm sure our question will never be answered. I sometimes wonder if women even understand their motives for certain things. In any case, this is why women will continue to boggle the minds of many for years to come.

#4.

memento_poster.jpg (7768 bytes) Those damn picture within a picture images - Those damn picture within a picture images - I'm sorry, but it's hard to explain what I'm talking about. Take the DVD cover of "Memento" for example. It has the photo within a photo that appears to repeat indefinitely. It's the same with that part in "Space Balls" where they are watching the movie of themselves in front of T.V. screens. Why does this f*ck with your mind? Well, because I have no idea whether or not it does repeat forever. I mean, if I take the "Memento" cover and use a microscope, will I be able to see the same image keep repeating. Probably not, because I would begin to see the dots that make up the cover image, but you get what I'm saying, at least I hope you do. Most people just write this thing off as an interesting phenomenon, but sometimes I analyze things too much, but because of the confusion this has caused me, it made the list.

#3.

blackhole.jpg (5758 bytes) Black Holes - I am currently taking an astronomy class so we naturally tackled the subject of black holes. What's so confusing about black holes you may ask? Well for one, they have no size, no diameter. Everything we know and that we are familiar with have dimensions we can measure. Everything that has mass creates a certain gravitational force on everything around it. And for the most part, everything that has mass also has measurable height width and depth. Black holes for whatever reason, refuse to be subject to the norm and instead have a height width and depth of zero. The second reason black holes boggle the mind, is that defy time as we know it. This is all theoretical of course, but the sequence of time a person would experience if they were sucked into a black hole is far different then anything one would experience outside of it. If a person was sucked into a black hole, events outside of the black hole would pass by very rapidly for them. They would be able to see the entire life cycle of a person go by in almost no time. Eventually, they wouldn't even be able to see the life cycle because it would pass so quickly. Then they would be able to see the birth and death of entire stars and galaxies. However to the person their voyage into the black hole would take almost no time at all. If we took a person say…oh I don't know, Tom Shook, and threw him into a black hole, we would never see him get sucked completely in. Our ancestors millions of years from now wouldn't be able to see him sucked in, to anyone watching outside the black hole, he would appear never to be sucked in. There is a line around the black hole that scientists call the "Event Horizon", because anything that occurs within this point will never be seen by anyone outside the black hole. According to Einstein, time is relative to where you are, but for me, that doesn't even begin to explain why black holes defy time as we know it. That is why black holes easily deserve to be on this list.

#2.

creation.jpg (9344 bytes) Creation - This has to be the mother of all questions, "Where did everything come from". The question that people have been asking since people could think logically, and the question which we will never know the answer. Whether you look at it from a scientific or theological point of view, few answers can be found. Science says that energy is neither created nor destroyed. If that's true then that means that something existed before the supposed "Big Bang" and that when our universe finally fades away(if that ever happens) then something will replace it. It's very hard for people to grasp the concept of no beginning or end because we are so use to everything having a beginning and an end. For me, that still doesn't answer the question of where everything came from. So let's look at it from a theological point of view. According to most religions, an all powerful being created the universe and life along with it. Well, where did this being come from? Is it so powerful that if created itself? Once again it's a question that sparks much debate. Like I said earlier, I am nearly 100 percent sure that mankind will never solve this riddle and if we did half the people of the world wouldn't like the answer. Though we won't be able to figure out where we came from, that doesn't mean we will ever stop thinking about it and because of that we will continue to give ourselves a headache trying to piece it all together.

#1.

matrix.jpg (12339 bytes) Descartes - What could be a harder concept to grasp than that of our creation, how about the concept of our existence? Descartes was a philosopher that seemed to decide that some things weren't complex enough, so he broke everything down in to what he could be sure of and what he could doubt. He broke things down to a point that the only thing that he could be certain of is that he existed. Not all of him though, just his mind. Because perhaps his body is just a creation of his mind much like the rest of the world could be. So it really doesn't matter where we all came from if everything we know is just a figment of our own mind now does it? His idea is pretty hard to refute, I mean how can you prove that right or wrong? It's very similar to the whole "Matrix" idea except just a couple hundred years earlier. How do we know that we all aren't in some vat somewhere with plugs in our head imputing information that we interpret to be the "Real World"? The thing is we don't know and never will. All I know, is that if Descartes is right and this is all in my head, damn I've got a good imagination. I mean seriously, if this is all my mind's take on the world, look how much crap I've created. The computer you are reading this article on, I made that (Unless it's a Mac, cuz we all know Macs were created by the Devil). My only question is, if the world is in my head, why I can't do any cool ish like in "The Matrix"? I wanna dodge bullets and long jump hundreds of feet. Oh well. In any case, Descartes definitely adds fuel to the fire of intellectual debate by adding an idea that can never be proven wrong and that will continue to ignite the thought process of people for many years to come.

-There are plenty of more things that could have been on this list, however these are all I could think of at the time I wrote this article. If you have anything to add or have some other deep and profound ideas that could be added to the list be sure to visit the Gyeah.com message boards and let your voice be heard.

-Now that you've read something, he's written. Wouldn't you like to find out more about Benzine? Here you go.
