More of the Same

A Review by

Vigilante

My opinion of the first "American Pie" is basically one big ass mixed bag. Upon first watching, the movie was downright hilarious...but even with the humor...I felt empty after watching it. Then upon numerous repeated viewings...I began to like it a little more and more because I would begin to see me and my friends through the four main guys in AP. Its not a great film, or even  a really good one. But it is definately something a bunch of people around the characters age and turning point in their lives could relate too. American Pie 2 is just more of the same.

After their first year apart at college, the guys (Kevin, Jim, Oz, Finch and Stifler) rent a beach house, vowing to celebrate their friendship and make this the best summer ever. But, as always, whether their dreams come true or not is ultimately up to the girls (Vicky, Michelle, Nadia, Heather and Jessica). Through one boisterous summer of ear-splitting parties, side-splitting mishaps - and, yes, a trip to band camp - the gang discovers that times change and people change, but friendship lasts a lifetime.

This movie has some serious funny moments.I won't really ruin them, cause that would take away from them. But they are there. Only two scenes really come to mind...the rest will all get chuckles. The third scene that would be normally laugh out loud hilarious loses some of its flare, cause its all over the damn tv and movie ads. Its good to see Stifler..um Nadia's back. Oh yeah, and once again Jim's dad is the best part of the film. Thats all I can say good about this film.

The entire gang is back....which probably is the biggest shot in the foot for this film. Too many characters means that the development or "growth" that is supposed to take place in this film is non existant. In the original, there were 4 characters, and the relationships of the rest of the gang evolved around them. Here...there are 10 f'n characters thrown together. Minus about 3 or 4 major/minor ones. Thats one big mess, and this movie truly falters there. No longer is the factor of growing up more even a factor. In fact, this film doesn't even try to make point of the fact that these people have grown after one year of college. They go through the exact same funny situations they did in college, more parties, more Stifler, and then when the jokes are out and its time for the end credits to come in...lets throw in the message. Why, because these characters are supposed to grow? Though Oz was apart of the main cast, his entire relationship storyline could've been scrapped. Cause it was pointless, and time consuming. The same can be said for Finch's story.

Another big problem for this movie is that if you don't watch the original...you are truly F*CK*D. There are so many refrences and jokes that rely on the fact that you've watched the original. Since AP has is own installed base for the most part, thats cool....however if this movie wanted to be a truly great sequel. It would be able to stand on its own, and make people who didn't see the first go back and watch it.

More Jim masturbating with his thing, more Stifler getting his share dosage of bodily fluids, more Stifler's mom...more of the same. If you absolutely adored American Pie...then you should see this to get one last glimpse of your fav characters. However, if AP 1 was a mixed bag..or you'e grown out of the gross out humor that was Ap1....stay away from this film. Go see Rush Hour 2. You'll be a lot more satisfied when you leave the theater.
