| This movie review
is for not just one...but two movies at once. The reason for this is because both releases
come on the same DVD..duh! Double features are another of the many great things about DVD,
hopefully in the future more lesser known movies come packaged together. This specific
double feature includes the slasher flick Cherry Falls and another horror movie, Terror
Tract. First, let's look at Cherry Falls. Falls is
just as good a movie (meaning it's not that great) as the other teen slashers in recent
years (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legends, Scream 3, etc.) But what
separates this movie from those, is it never takes itself seriously. Sure there are some
laughs in Scream and Legends, but this is more subtle, darker and just plain better
comedy. One I quote I love in Falls, coins the phrase "Hymen Holocaust." Don't
get me wrong though, this movie is still very gory and is no doubt what you would classify
as "horror."
How does this movie balance dark comedy and gore. That's
easy, just check out the plot: Someone is terrorizing the small town of Cherry Falls.
Specific high school students are being murdered...the virgins. As the police attempt to
track down the killer, the students throw a wild sex party in an attempt to lose their
virginity and to take their names off the list of possible victims. Blood is about to
flow...in more ways than one.
This movie isn't great by any means and doesn't have any
big names to speak of (the biggest is Jay Mohr), but despite this its still a fun way to
waste two hours of your life.
The lesser known movie on this disc, is the Tales from
the Crypt-inspired, Terror Tract. Tract stars Three's Company Icon, John Ritter, as a
Realtor who's showing houses to a couple. Each house they stop at he tells them a story
that took place within it's walls. Each story is straight out of an episode from Tales
from the Crypt, as they blend horror, comedy, and irony. The stories include a husband
attempting to get revenge on his cheating wife, a murderous monkey, and a serial killer
who dresses in an old woman mask. But the stories don't end there, it seems the Realtor
has a story all his own.
This movie is a refreshing, low-budget horror movie that
is surprisingly better than most of the high profile garbage out there. And wrestling fans
will have to check out this flick just to see WCW's Marcus "Buff" Bagwell as he
attempts to hunt the murderous monkey.
Finally, neither of these movies are classics by any
stretch of the imagination, but both are great ways to spend a night. And with two for the
price of one, you really can't go wrong with this double feature.
