Ron Rifkin (Boiler Room)
Kathryn Erbe (Stir of Echoes)
Linda Hunt (Shrek)
Kathy Bates (The Dress Code)
Directed by: Tom Shadyac (Happy Gilmore, Patch Adams, Liar Liar)
Ok, So I'm the first to admit that this movie had me very confused all the way up until I
saw the trailer. Everything Shadyac has done has been absolutely hilarious. But when I
read the 'written trailer' for this movie I couldnt imagine it being funny.... I didnt
know it wasnt supposed to be.
Everything Costner touches is gold. I'm a Costner nut... Plain and simple. And I'm really
into that whole 'Stir of Echoes, Sixth Sense, etc' genre. So I knew no matter how bad this
movie could be - I'd love it.
Costner plays Emergency room physician Joe Darrow who's forced to deal with the untimely
death of his wife.
Joe is certain that his wife is sending him messages from the dead. She uses the
near-death experiences of her former patients to communicate a very confusing message.
Until a trip to Venezuela (the scene of his wife's death) you will probably be uncertain
as to how this movie will turn out.
Joe struggles with the notion that maybe his wife (Emily) really isnt dead... Or maybe
she's not really trying to communicate with him. Maybe he's a classic overworked griever
hallucinating the whole thing.
I think Costner really plays the part here. You can see the anguish and torment on his
face throughout the entire film. A smile is rarely more than cracked.
There's not much for character development in this movie. It's a very linear film. Point A
-> Point B - Thanks for coming! But that doesnt have to be a bad thing...neither does
the fact that this movie won't make you laugh even once.
I challange you to find a good review of Dragonfly. It just won't happen. Costner's been
having a hard time with it lately. But I liked this one. If for nothing else, because it
didnt give me a reason not to.Rating: out
of four. |
