| I really wanted to check this film out the second its teaser was
shown awhile back on a movie I saw. I was sold the moment it said "Directed by Ivan
Reitman...director of "Ghostbusters". For people who don't know me, or have yet
to bother with the staff page...that is one of my favorite films of all time. So I was
definitely going to be at the film that shows what happens when the
"Ghostbusters" meet the "Men In Black". "Evolution" stars the oddly paired quartet of David Duchovny (X-Files),
Orlando Jones (Mad TV), Sean Williams Scott (American Pie, Final Destination), and
Julianne Moore (Hannibal). The comedy follows the chaos that ensues when a meteor
hits the earth carrying alien life forms that give new meaning to the term "survival
of the fittest." These four are the only people standing between the aliens and
world domination which could be bad news for the earth.
There are some hilarious moments in this film, and there are some moments where
laughter is supposed to occur...but its just not funny to the audience. I'm sure when they
were filming it, it was downright hilarious to them...but we're left wondering where some
of these jokes came from. That, of course, only happens a few times in
"Evolution". For the most part, the stories laughter and plot are mixed together
rather nicely. Unfortunately, it has so many similarities to Ivan Reitman's
"Ghostbuster" and "Ghostbusters 2" that it's scary. From the
commercial promoting themselves and their services, to the shotgun/proton pack
scene....this movie owes A LOT to GB. That's not a bad thing, considering how iconic those
films are. But, it doesn't give Evolution much room to stand on its own merits.
Sean Williams Scott and Orlando Jones steal the show here with their comedic geniuses,
while Duchovny has a more laid back sarcastic time humor...more along the lines of Peter
Venkman in "Ghostbusters". Just not NEARLY as funny. Its good to see Julianne
Moore doing movies where she's not balling her eyes out in the entire film.
The actors in this film appear to have had a wonderful time filming this movie, and
when you leave the theater, their enjoyment will have rubbed off on you. Its a good
movie...even if it is the poor man's "Ghosbusters".
Rating: 1/2 out of four. |
