Lord of the Rings

A Review by

Vigilante

As anyone with an ear to the grind knows, today is the day the film everyone's been waiting for comes to theaters. So, when I was given the opportunity to check it out at 12:01...I was all over that bitch. So I grabbed up Stalker and Angel, and headed to the theatre to check out what all the fuss was about. After a 20 minute delay, some mouth watering trailers (Blade 2 and Spiderman being among them), and the traditional applause from all the fanboys. The film was set on it way. Once the smoke was clear, and all was said and done. Lord of the Rings has added another fanboy to the masses.

The future of civilization rests in the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it. But fate has placed it in the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring and steps into legend.

I will start this off by saying that I have never read one of these books. I had no desire to until lately, but I refused to read them with the films on the horizon. That way, I could be totally engulfed into this world without being bias or having my own thoughts on how things should look. By doing this, I have to say that this is visually the most stunning film I've ever seen. Its as if I'm watching an RPG come to life with nothing seeming impossible. I was completely amazed as to how much detail was placed within this film, and how seamlessly CGI and real action intertwined. I've never seen anything like it before.

As far as acting goes, Ian McKellen OWNS the show. His Gandalf is beyond perfect, and adds more humanity to this film than any of the other characters combined. Stryder and Boromir also eat up the screen with inner turmoil and emotions that carry well on screen. Elijah does nicely as Frodo, but I think there is more to see from him in the future installments of this series.

What really made me a 'mark' to this film was the dark action scenes. Man, this film slaps more action into it than I think I've seen in some action films. F*ck that 'slap an action scene in at the end' shit that Star Wars did, this film has it from the opening 2 minutes to the very end. Its so much fighting on the plate, that you're either going to throw up due to being overfilled. Or be like me, and enjoy every single morsel of it.

I have only one major qualm with this film, and that is the scenes with Liv Tyler. I've already stated that I have not read these books, but something about her just doesn't fit into this film. I personally feel that any scenes involving her should be burned...luckily she's only in there for a few quick minutes.

At the end of this film, I wanted to get a reaction from other people. From most people who weren't aware of this film being a trilogy (females), it was "That's it, what happens to them now?". Perfect, that's exactly what the reaction should be. I don't know if I can wait for next X-mas, but its a lot faster than the 3 year shit that Lucas puts us through. This film is a masterpiece, and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys movies. To take a quote from an ol' school videogame..."Flawless Victory".
