My heart has been destroyed!

A Review by

Vigilante

I don't remember when I first saw the commercial for "Heartbreakers", but whenever it was. It didn't seem like the type of movie that would interest me in the least bit. I mean, the beautiful Jennifer Love Hewitt was in the film, showing every inch of her wonderful figure that has graced the dreams of many a young men. Yet, the movie still didn't seem like it was up Vigilante's alley. For once, I'm glad I threw my instincts out the window.

"Heartbreakers" stars Sigourney Weaver ("Ghostbusters", "Aliens") as Max, a sexy woman that drives men absolutely nuts. She also a money making mastermind, as she marries rich men only to divorce them for settlement money when she catches them sleeping around. Of course, for the plan to work without a hitch, she has to have an accomplice, that accomplice is none other than her daughter Page (Hewitt "I Know What You Did Last Summer", "Can't Hardly Wait").

Max and Page are the gorgeous con artist team who has made many a men cry at the loss of beautiful woman and their money. Unfortunately for the duo, during one of their scams Page falls in love with the "boy next door" (Jason Lee "Dogma"). Page begins to do all the things her mother taught her not to do...namely gain morals. Her mother finds out, and she fears for her daughter to not become like she did when she was young. Page and Max then must fix up there whacked out relationship, continue working on there next con, and Max must try to save her daughter from getting her heart broken.

Whoever wrote this movie needs to be showered with little pieces of gold. This movie's script is flawless, as it blends humor, love story, meaning, and great characters to make this one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time. Hewitt is finally beginning to break away from those teen-esque flicks, and she shows some real acting in this film. The chemistry between she and her mother is simply breathtaking, as you get the feeling that these two are more like sisters than mother and daughter. Sigourney looked like she was actually having fun with this movie, and her performance showed that even more.

What really put this movie over the top for me were the supporting characters. Ray Liotta is f'n hilarious. I didn't know he had it in him. In fact, I want to see this guy in more comedies just to see if it was a one-time thing. Ray Liotta steals the show in this film as the latest victim to the Max/Page con. He had me busting a gut everytime he was on camera. Gene Hackman was also very humorous as the walking cancerous corpse that was the target for the girl’s next mission. Him choking on smoke 24/7 will bring a tear to any man's eye. And I can't forget Jason Lee; his character in this film is the perfect off setting straight man to all of these other zany characters. He has some of the funniest lines in the movie, and he delivers them with such accuracy for his character.

Aside from the characters, humor, and emotion put into this film. I was amazed by how smart this film was. There are some serious twists and turns in this movie, and they add just another ingredient to one of the best film in 2001.

If you're a guy, and you want a smart, funny movie where you can see Jennifer Love and Sigourney Weaver in everything BUT their birthday suit...then see this movie. If you're a girl, and you want a funny, romantic film that offers more to the table then just pure corn...then see this movie. If you like films...then see this movie. I guarantee you that you won't have as much fun this year with anything else.
