I knew little to nothing about this film before going to see it.
I saw the trailer, and from that the overall story was still a little fuzzy. But, after
seeing "Jeepers Creepers", I am willing to say its one of the best uses for your
money in the theater today.
College age siblings Trish (Gina Philips) and Darry (Justin Long)
are driving home for spring break. On a particularly isolated stretch of road, they find
themselves in a cat-and-mouse game with a big, scary-looking truck that tries to run them
off the road. The vehicle disappears, much to their relief; later, however, they see the
same truck parked near an abandoned church and see the truck's shadowy driver
dumping something that looks very much like a sheet-wrapped human body.
I enjoyed this film thoroughly. From start to finish. Just the
way the characters were introduced was a breath of fresh air....through one on one
dialouge. And the fact that the main characters were bro and sis is a huge plus for me.
(NO CORNY ASS LOVE STORIES). Also, though brought on themselves, this film blends horror,
suspense, gore into a perfect little compact flick and runs with it. You are literally on
the edge of your seat for the entire movie. Why? My guess is because none of the people in
this movie are big name stars...SOO..anyone's fair game in the battle of life and death.
The ending of this sucker is ICON, but it feels like something could've been added in
right before its arrival.
However great the suspense, and overall effect this film has on
the viewer...there are still a couple of things that just nag at the back at my brain.
First, and this is not anything personal against those of the caucasion race, these have
to be the dumbest white people on God's green Earth. When horror movies throw people into
these situations, and then allow them to make some dumb mistakes here and there..thats
fine. This film however has to have these dumb ass mistakes made to get into the general
purpose of the film...and it happens more than once. Basically, if two african-american
people had been the bro and sis duo...this movie wouldn't even exist. Though ignorance
seems to be the catalyst for this film, the tension overbalances their dumb ass ideas..and
almost allows you to accept it.
Of course, there is another problem. "The Creeper" as we shall call him/her/it.
This thing is awesome, but SOME background info would be nice. Why does he do what he do?
How was he created, where did he come from? I mean, this film basically ignores that whole
question and says....he came from the crevices of the world's biggest ass.
This film is a great start to the fall lineup, and a definate
throw back to the ol school horror flicks before the "Scream" days. If you're
looking for a great scare in your life, then look no further than Jeepers Creepers.
Rating: 1/4 out of four.
