I knew nothing at all about this movie up until 4 weeks ago when I first saw
the trailer for it. After seeing the poor-mans All-Star cast for this film - I instantly
put it on my calendar. This movie is
receiving mixed reviews. Some are reluctant to see a movie involving 'hostage-taking'
after Sept 11. I say GET OVER IT! Washington plays struggling factory worker John
Archibald. After being cut to 20 hours a week, Archibald and his wife will live paycheck
to paycheck until the unthinkable happens.
During a little league baseball game Archibald's son falls
with a heart condition. This is where is all starts... John will get the run around from
everyone - His insurance company, the hospital, his work. They find out they cannot afford
the necessary $250,000 heart transplant and his insurance wont cover it. He makes too much
for assitance and makes too little for the operation.
He's left with no choice. After being told that unless he
comes up with the money his son will be released, 'John Q' takes the emergency room
hostage. "The hospital is under new management"
'John Q' if nothing else has some great characters. Duvall,
Liotta, and Heche all do a wonderful job in this film. At times, its even a source of
comedy.
Give the movie a chance - Don't buy into the "bad
episode of Chicago Hope" nonsense. The ending is not totally predictible and you'll
stay entertained through that end. I
t's a classic tale of the 'little guy' fighting back:
Against hospitals, against HMO's, against the system.
