In 1993, Steven Speilberg created a film that would change the
way people looked at movies once again. Like he did with "E.T", Mr.
Speilberg created a thrill ride adventure film that was both dark and deep in story, but
done so wonderfully that it would capture the hearts and imagination of a worldwide
audience.
Based on Michael Crichton's ravenous bestseller,
"Jurassic Park" is a story about an eccentric billionaire (Richard Attenborough)
whom invites two paleontologists (Sam Neil & Laura Dern), a scientist (Jeff Goldbum),
and a lawyer to his private island off South America to see if they will give him
backing for his new family theme park. This park is no regular park. No, the park
consists of man made specimens of genetically engineered dinosaurs!
"Jurassic Park" had the balls and guts to do something most summer movies refuse
to do nowadays. It took characters and a story, and took a solid amount of time in the
film to flesh them and the story out. In fact, the story was so well done that when the
action/thrills begin to kick in...one truly feels attached to the characters. A person,
like myself, is actually thrown on the edge of the seat about the fate of the people you
have spent the last hour learning about. You want to see them live, you're seeing their
thoughts and fears through your own eyes. This film is like that feeling you get when you
go to an actual theme park. You stand in line in anticipation, checking out all the fun
you're going to have on the ride when it gets started. Then, you hop on the ride and wait
for them to buckle everyone in. Then the ride kicks off, and your anticipation has been
built up so much that the ride just takes you into pure bliss. This is what "Jurassic
Park" does for the viewer.
Aside from the characters and plot, "Jurassic
Park" did something visually breathtaking at the time of release. Recreating
dinosaurs is something that anyone could do, but not something everyone could do well.
Jurassic Park does much better than well. They recreate dinosaurs that look so life like
its nearly unbelievable to behold. Not only are these dino's so wonderfully done, but they
are so real that they actually are able to convey fear into the audience. Most CGI's look
horrible, and are very easy to spot where cgi and reality mesh. Here, its virtually
seamless.
"Jurassic Park" will go down in history as one
of the best films ever made. It re-defined a genre that was basically
dead,(Adventure/Survival Horror), redefined the usage of Computer Generated Imaging, and
made a summer film with not only action...but heart as well. "Jurassic Park",
rather bad or good, will always hold a place in movie watchers hearts.
