| Tonite I ventured to
the local megaplex with a near 100% chance of watching a flick that I've been waiting for.
With I Am Sam, Gosford Park, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Lord of the Rings, The Royal
Tennebaums, and The Mothman Prophecies all showing...how the hell could I go wrong? I
don't think I can remember a time when there was a more solid selection of movies out. The
only turd that was playing was Kung Pow: I like fisting! I Am Sam was sold out and my
girlfriend had her mind set on seeing Mothman, and I know better than to argue with her in
public, ha. Actually, I too had an odd desire to see Richard Gere's latest starring
supernatural vehicle. The trailer for this
movie gave away nearly NOTHING of the final film. When is the last time you can say that?
Sure you got some shots of some sort of being communicating with Gere over the phone,
shouting out predictions and basically reading his mind. We weren't told what was going on
or what it was intended to mean, shit for all we knew it was just Miss Cleo and her and
Gere were just "keepin it real!"
I can't tell you what an enjoying surprise The Mothman
Prophecies was as a truly interesting and freaky story was unfolded on the 20 foot screen
in front of me. This wasn't a "change the world" flick, it wasn't something
you'd be talking about for months, and it wasn't strikingly original. It was just a solid
and interesting movie that kept you from squirming around in an uncomfortable theater seat
and complaining like a mothergrabber during the car ride home. This was a film that felt
like something of the caliber and subject matter that M. Night would film. But before I
make any more comparisons or slap on any more praise, I should probably break down the
plot of Mothman (if you want as a refreshing take on the movie as I had, skip the next
paragraph):
-Mothman tells the story of a man (Gere) who's recently
suffered a great tragedy in his life. The tragedy seems to be caused by some sort of
supernatural being that has chosen to communicate with people. The being's have been
well-documented around many sites of terror and destruction for thousands of years. The
beings seem to be either warning the people of the death that is soon coming, or are
perhaps even causing these fates. The beings have for some reason or another, chosen to
communicate with Gere and have a message for him. The message could save lives, but can he
understand it? And how will anyone take him seriously?
Well that's a basic rundown of the plot with me attempting
to be as freakishly vague as possible. I almost hope you didn't read it like I suggested.
What I've told you isn't going to ruin the movie by any means, but it's great come in with
a blank slate.
Yeah I know, you're getting fed up with me constantly
mentioning words like "refreshing" and "blank slate", well I hear ya,
so I'll give it a rest. I just want to say a few more things about Mothman: This movie is
one of those rare horror/thrillers that sends an occasional chill down your spine, yet is
accessible to the masses. It's nothing that is going to have replay value, but is a GREAT
example that a mainstream movie still can be a quality film. You won't love it, but I can
guarantee that over 95% of you will enjoy it. Is Mothman worth your 6 bucks? You can bet
your gerbil tube!
