O Brother Where Art Thou

Brotherly Love.

A Review by

Vigilante

The Coens have definately made a name for themselves as two of the most unique filmmakers today. This time around, the Coens take the classic tale of Homer's, "The Odyssey", and add their own modern twist on it.

In "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?", George Clooney stars as Ulysses Everett McGill. A silver-tongued, petty criminal, having some difficulty adjusting to the regimentation of life as a man sentenced to a term of hard labor in Mississippi. Reluctant to spend any more time crushing rocks, he scams his way off the chain gang with a clumsy duo of lame losers: sweet and simple Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), and the maladjusted Pete (John Turtorro). The trio embarks on the adventure of a lifetime as they set out to pursue their freedom and the promise of sharing in the division of a fortune in buried treasure. Meanwhile, the trio is being hunted by a mysterious lawman named Cooley. A man that will stop at nothing to get the three men back to the prison farm.

I can't say I've had the honor of seeing any of the Coen's previous films, but I must say that this movie will definately have me going back and checking out some of their older films. OBWAT is a hilarious film, and it is done beautifully. The movie borrows loosely from the Oddysey tale, and is one of the greatest movie adventures I've ever had the chance of witnessing. This film blends emotion, setting, adventure, and humor flawlessly. What really brought me into this film was the use of music and dance. Its not so in your face like a disney film, but its there and it meshes perfectly with the film. I mean where else are you going to see a dance number from the KKK, and it be downright hilarious and frightening?

The role of McGill was made for Clooney's smart lipped style of acting, and Turtorro and Nelson as the dumbfounded followers perfectly play off of McGill's "know it all". John Goodman drops in to add some hilarious moments, and so do the likes of Holly Hunter, Chris Thomas King, and Michael Badalucco to round off the perfect cast.

I guarantee you won't have as much fun at the theatre until you see OBWAT. You owe it to yourself to see one good film this year. And when you come out of the theatre. I bet you'll be singing "I am a man, of constant sorrow..." You'll see..oh you'll see.
