I finally got a chance to sit
down with Pi: Faith in Chaos on DVD. The reason I wanted to give it a spin now was due to
all the press that Darren Aronofsky's (Director/Writer of Pi) new film Requiem for a Dream
was getting. Dream's plot of people caught in utter addiction sounded like right up my
alley, but of course it never came to theaters in my area. So instead I went to Aronofskys
first film, Pi, to see how he got his big break.
All I knew of Pi is what many of you probably know...the plot. It's the story of Max Coen,
a brilliant mathematican, who believes that there is a pattern to all things in the
world...including the stock market. As he gets closer and closer to finding order out of
the chaos, more and more chaos enters his life and mind. A large corporation intent on
making money off of Max's discoveries hounds him along with a pack of Rabbi's who believe
Max can solve the mysteries of their religon and the true name of God.
The stock market plot was enough to get me hyped to watch this movie. And I just loved how
it not only had a low-budget, but practically no-budget. Around 60,000 dollars was all it
took to make this movie. That's about 300 times less than your average movie...wow is all
I can say. On the behind the scenes features on the DVD, you can even see the director's
mother making food for the cast.
Sure it doesn't look the best, but the black and white format does the movie good in my
opinion. When a movie has a small budget, no stars, and no color...all your focus is on
the movie. You're not saying "Damn, Julia Roberts is getting fat," "I can't
believe he's in this, I remember him as that bucketheaded retard." The entire movie
rests on the plot, just how I like it. Clerks succeeded despite its low-budget and B&W
because the highlight of the movie was the dialogue. I liken Pi as the sci-fi thriller
version of Clerks. But instead of dialogue, this movie's highlight is how you feel Max's
descent into madness (including his headache sequences that actually gave me headaches of
my own). But that's almost all I want to say about the plot of Pi, I want you to
experience it just as I did...as a virgin. I want you to awkardly feel your way through Pi
on your own, hehe.
In closing, let it be known, this is a film you will never find made in Hollywood with a
big budget. If a big studio got their hands on this script, it would end up starring
someone like Nicholas Cage to totally f it up, and of course the ending would be changed.
Even Hannibal's ending was changed, but in that case it was for the better...but that's a
whole 'nother rant. But honestly, this disturbing film doesn't end like most movies. Oh
no, its much better than that. It's a wild ride from beginning to end, and I wouldn't have
wanted it to end in any other way. If you liked movies like American Psycho, A Clockwork
Orange, and 2001: A Space Odyssey..you'll love Pi.
Rating: out of four. *Note: It was damn hard to resist the temptation
of giving Pi 3.14 stars. |
