| Well, since Chris Rock's show has been removed from the
airwaves...he has to find something new to pay the bills. His next effort is the black
superhero comedy starring a character often represented on his late night HBO show. I had
every fear in the world going through my mind before seeing this film. One, this film has
had little to NO promotion. Instead it just sneaks out into the theater, and puts little
half ass commercials on BET and MTV. Then we have yet another film from Chris Rock, the
most annoying comic on the face of God's green Earth. Chris Rock in limited supply is
tolerable....like his time in Dogma & Nurse Betty. However when you have to listen to
his annoying comedic delivery for an entire film ("Down to Earth")...you find
yourself wanting to put a gun to your head. Luckily, Rock's time on film is limited. In this comedy, children worship Pootie Tang (Lance Crouther),
even though he has an odd speech impediment that makes him impossible to comprehend.
Pootie Tang is determined to protect kids from a capitalizing pig, Dick Lecter, who tries
to hook kids on bad habits like smoking and drinking.
This movie is like a lampooning of black films such as
Shaft and Superfly. Its done in such a way that will have you laughing in stitches. Some
things are so over to the top that you'll laugh hysterically at how off the wall some
things are. In fact, I think a lot of people will enjoy this movie regardless. But even
more would enjoy it while under the influence of some illegal substances. The problem with
this movie is that the laughs are a tad uneven. In the first 1/3 of the film...the movie
is at a breakneck laugh till you die pace. However the middle of the film drags a bit, and
has some chuckles here and there. I think if it wasn't for the few scenes with Rock in the
middle of this film (not Rock so much as Rock's response to another character) that the
film would really start dragging. However the last third of the film kinda gets the gears
rolling again.
"Pootie Tang" is one of those films thats so
f'n dumb, that you're going to laugh your ass off. Its by no means plot heavy, or acting
based. Its just an all out comedy that succeeds in what its supposed to do. Make
your ass laugh. African American's...don't see Baby Boy...see "Pootie Tang".
They are both comedies, but only one of them is supposed to be. I think the rest of the
races of America will make the right decision on their own. If not, all I can say is...Sa
Da Tay.
