Lola Runs More than
Forest
A Review by
Goc |
I'd heard about this
flick for quite some time, but for some reason I never grabbed it off the shelf at the
rental store. I've often picked it up, read the back, and put it back down. Then I went on
my way and rented a different..inferior movie. This week I finally gave Run Lola Run a
chance, and damn, I'm glad I did.
As many of you may know, Run Lola Run is a movie from Germany, meaning obviously it's not
in English. But on the DVD, there are dubbed in English voices (ala Crouching Tiger). With
this feature present, the language barrier completely disappears. Every review I read
about this flick referred to it as a "rollercoaster ride." Was this a fair
comparison? YOU'RE DAMN SKIPPY!
Run Lola Run tells the story of Lola and her boyfriend Manni. Manni doesn't exactly make
his living legitimately, and he recently got a big job assigned to him by his boss. The
drop-off and the payment go perfectly, but when he goes to deliver the cash to his boss,
everything goes wrong. He losses the 100,000 on a train, and he only has 20 minutes before
his boss is supposed to show up. Manni calls Lola for help, and together they have to
figure out how they can get 100,000 dollars before the deadline. Lola sprints to the meet
Manni, as her mind races just as fast.
The story of Lola sounds fast and exciting, and it certainly is. The movie is full of
interesting shots and is the equivalent of DVD adrenaline. The directing style of Lola is
somewhat similar to Darren Aronofsky (Pi & Requiem for a Dream) in fast forward. The
shots in the movie are great to watch, and when the movie makes a short change into
animation, it works perfectly.
Many have dismissed Lola as nothing more than an experiment in a different type of
film-making. Personally I see that as just critics trying to piss on a film that came out
of nowhere. Lola is just like any other story we've seen before, it's just done with much
more excitement. I think of Lola as a sort of choose your own adventure story in film
format. You obviously have no choice on the film's outcome, but you can see how Lola's
choices ultimately change everything. Like a butterfly flapping it's wings, this film
express that better than anything I've ever seen. An example of this in the film is, when
Lola interacts with people there are still flashes of later scenes in their life. For
example one older lady is shown to be a lottery winner in the future. Or a man on a bike
is shown crashing and meeting his future wife the same day. Touches like this make Lola
different than anything I've ever seen. Sure it's a foreign film, but after a few minutes
you don't even notice that the voices aren't completely in sync with the lips. Don't come
into this movie thinking of things to nit-pick, just pop it in, sit back and enjoy the
ride.
Rating: 1/2 out of four. |
