Sorry Movie Too

A Review by

Vigilante

My feelings towards the first "Scary Movie" weren't too kind. I found certain things funny, while other things were simply distasteful and WAY off base. The things I found funny were the little knocks to the slasher films. The things not funny were the 'penis through the ear' gag and other unnecessary gags to try to get a giggle out of the obviously juvenile audiences. Well, now that I've seen "Scary Movie 2"...I believe the first one to be a classic work of art.

The group of teens that survived the massacre from "Scary Movie" find themselves guinea pigs to an experiment of insomnia inside a haunted house. While inside, the teens find themselves being haunted by an angry spirit from the dead, that won't allow them to leave. So, "set up scene" by "set up scene", the teens have to find themselves a way out of the "hell house"

When this film first started, I had every fear that I would be wasting another 1+ of my life viewing pure crap. I was quite shocked when the opening scene of "Scary Movie 2" had me in stitches (similar to the way the opening in the original was the best part). James Woods is simply hilarious, and the entire spoof on "Exorcist" is wonderfully done. For a few more seconds, the film continues its trend of comedic intelligence...with a knock at "Save The Last Dance" & "Dude Where's My Car" (Neither of those are slasher or thriller horror films, but we will get to that later.). Then, the second Chris Elliot comes onto the screen..the film completely goes to shit. No longer are their laugh out loud moments, hell there aren't even chuckle moments. There are just points where you wish you wish you were doing something else and points where you don't. I can count on hand 2 more times I actually laughed after Elliot's character came on the screen. That's sad for a movie that calls itself a comedy.

One huge problem with "Scary Movie 2" is that it tries to spoof WAY to many things at one time. From "Save the last dance", to "Dude Where's My Car", to Charlie's Angel..not to mention the suspense thrillers it was primarily done on. The Nike scene was funny, but its blatantly obvious that it was added after shoots were done as it ties in NO WAY to the scene after it. Also, slasher picks are a lot easier to make fun of because of their over campiness and ignorance. However, suspense thrillers are a lot harder to poke fun of consistently. But, for this movie to show that it can do it well in the opening sequence, and then just not give a damn anymore at the end...is just plain sad.

No one in this film stands out.Tim Curry was decent, and could've been better had he more screen time.  Marlon Wayans is still playing the same annoying ass character. Chris Elliot should be shot for putting in such a HORRID performance. The talking bird must've seemed funny to someone out there, cause its in there a lot. But the audience I was with didn't even laugh at that damn thing. Shawn Wayans is the funniest character in the movie, but he grows tired quick as an entire first movie of gay jokes, along with this movie of gay jokes makes the whole thing a little tired. Hell, this movie tries a few things to recreate the gross out effect that Scary Movie 1 did. The original film did so well with the gross out comedy because it was brand new, and caught people off guard. Here, people are expecting it, and they do the EXACT same thing they did in the first one. I guess they like beating the shit out of that dead horse.

Basically what I'm saying here people....don't see this movie. If you want a comedy to make you laugh...see Pootie Tang. Otherwise wait till August when the motherload of comedies hit. (Ironically enough the real comedies I speak of were trailered in front of this film "Rush Hour 2", "American Pie 2", and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back".) Hell, if you must...re-watch "Scary movie". Its TEN TIMES funnier than this feces.

Rating:  1/2 out of four.
