The Mexican

El Camino...

The official "spring" movies are underway now, and it appears the first movie up to bat is "The Mexican". "The Mexican" stars two of my favorite actors in the world, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt, in a script that was originally going to be used as a low budget film. But Pitt wanted to do it, and he had the perfect lady to star with him…America’s sweetheart...Julia Roberts.

Romantic crime comedy about a "Gumpish" underworld errand boy named Jerry Welbach (Pitt) whose stormy relationship with his girlfriend, Samantha (Roberts), self-destructs when he accepts a risky job south of the border. Both become mob targets on separate, fraught-filled road trips after he winds up holding a rare pistol, the Mexican, coveted by his boss. Finding the pistol proves easy. Getting it home is another matter. "The Mexican" supposedly carries a legendary curse-a legend Jerry is given every reason to believe, as everything that could go wrong does. And to top it all off, Jerry finds out that Samantha is taken hostage by a hit man (James Gandolfini) to ensure the safe return of the pistol.

This film would have been a solid film has Pitt and Roberts not been apart of it, but because they were…its ten times better. This script is wonderfully written, perhaps overwritten (more on that in a bit), and Pitt and Roberts chemistry together is...well...flawless. The film blends romance/comedy elements with action/adventure elements that make this film enjoyable for both females and males. In fact, I am willing to make the biggest oxymoron to date and call "The Mexican" the ‘man’s romance’ movie. The love story is there, but to it is added a touch of spice called adventure. Folks, there are enough twists and turns in this movie to make you think you were on Disney World’s Space Mountain. Pitt and Roberts, who spend only a 3rd of screen time together, work together perfectly…you, truly feel for this cute couple. But the show stealer for me has to be the "Sopranos" James Gandolfini…. His chemistry and scenes with Roberts are awesome.

This film is wonderfully directed, with a style similar to that of "Traffic" which changes colors a little between the scenes in Mexico and the U.S. The script, like I said before, is KICK ASS…but some people may become a little lost with the multiple stories thrown it at once. This is definitely a plot thick film, and if you’re not ready to keep up…you might just as well stay home. If you’re like me though, and dialogue and plot is what gets your blood boiling...then you’ll enjoy this film

"The Mexican" is what I thought it would be, and more. I really loved this film, and Vigilante’s girlfriend did as well. It’s a film with enough to satisfy both genders, and keep the avid movie fan enthused. I can’t wait to see Pitt and Roberts on screen together again…and this time with my boy George Clooney in "Ocean’s 11", in the meantime…see this movie. You won’t be disappointed.
