| Thursday Night, Vigilante stepped into s staff screening of
one of the summer's biggest movie events. The trailers ended, and the opening action
sequence came on the screen. From that moment, Vigilante knew he was in for an enjoyable
ride. I wasn't impressed with anything that took place during this film, but I was very
pleased. In "Tomb Raider", Angelina Jolie
plays the videogame heroine Lara Croft. Through dreams she has about her late father, Lara
comes across a ancient relic labeled as the "All Seeing Eye". The "all
seeing eye" is a key to two to halves of a triangle separated and sent to
opposite ends of the Earth. It is separated because the sole possessor of the triangle
would have complete and total power of time...and in fact become in some fashion...a God.
The clue of the All-Seeing Eye is that it can only be used at the moment of planetary
alignment that comes every 5,000 years. Its up to Lara to beat the evil group of
Illuminati and destroy the two pieces of the triangle before they fall into the wrong
hands.
Yeah, that is a very exhausting and convoluted story..but
its SOUNDS a lot tougher than it really is. Its also not very plausible, but is a popcorn
movie about the world's most popular videogame character supposed to be. Its a shit load
of fun. The story is told through exposition from flashbacks with Jon Voight, and is
pieced together with 4 kick ass action scenes. They aren't breathtaking action scenes by
any means, but they are edited and done in a way that make you smile and cheer the
heroine.
The acting here is what can be expected from a film where
everyone is British or trying to put on a British accent. Angelina Jolie was MADE to be
Laura Croft. She embodies every look, movement, and reaction that Lady Croft owned in the
videogame. I would love to see what Lara could do with this character a second time
around. There are also one liners throughout the film that could be missed or not noticed
by many because the characters accents are so strong. But I laughed quite a few times, and
felt pretty damn nice watching Lara go through her quest.
My complaints about this film are that the final action
scene could've been a lot LONGER. Its not bad, and I know a battle between a female and a
male pisses quite a few people off...but for the most part an extra minute here or there
would've been nice. Also, the last two minutes before the credits just feels odd...I know
they wanted to leave it open for a sequel...but its just like a "here we go
again" type of feel. Of course, it worked for Mortal Kombat. So I guess its fine
here.
By no means is this an award winning flick, but its a
hell of a lot of fun. Its Mummy Returns, Con Air, Mortal Kombat, Armageddon type of
fun. I enjoyed all of those films, and I had the same enjoyment after seeing Tomb Raider.
Kids will enjoy the videogame flick, girls will be impressed by the bad ass female
heroine, and guys will flock to Jolie like peanut butter to jelly. This is a fun movie.
Its not Indiana Jones (you will be disappointed if you think it will be)...but it doesn't
have to be. It is its own flick, and I know I will see it a few more times in the
theater before it comes to DVD.
