Under the radar...

A Review by

Goc

I recently got the chance to check out a movie I've been looking forward to for some time. The movie was "Under Suspicion" starring Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman. Despite the two huge stars (who are also Co-Executive Producers) in this movie, I don't know anyone who has seen this movie. But with a tag line like, "Everyone has secrets. Some of them are crimes," who wouldn't want to check this one out?

So I did just that, and two hours later I had a different view on the movie. But before I get into that, let me give you a quick plot synopsis:

Victor Benezet (Freeman) is a veteran police captain who is investigating the rape and murder of two young girls. After each death, the killer chillingly posed each body for photographing. Prominent Tax Attorney Henry Hearst (Hackman) discovered one of the bodies on a morning jog. Benezet calls in Hearst for questioning, and with each question Hearst looks increasingly guilty. But is Benezet just looking for publicity? Or are his motives just?

That about sums all that can be said about the movie, without ruining much of its plot. But is this movie worth watching? Yes. Is it a great movie? Not quite. Some things near the climax of the movie were left a little too vague for my liking, but I enjoyed many other aspects of the movie, including:

-Whenever Freeman interrogates a suspect, the movie shows the scene as if he was there the entire time, watching and interacting with the suspect. This technique makes Freeman look like the great cop they portray him as and it helps you to get into his head.

-The verbal sparring between Freeman and Hackman will keep anyone watching. Two of the best actors of our time sparring off over their guilt, motives, marriages, and morals. What more could you ask for?

In conclusion, I know this review has been very vague. But I fear letting out any plot points that might ruin this movie for you. This movie depends on just a few minor points and I don't want to slip up and let you know they're coming. This movie isn't full of explosions or police chases. Most of the movie takes place in just one room. So I know you're left wondering, "Well should I watch this damn movie or not?" If you're a fan of Hackman or Freeman..HELL YES! Freeman deserves an Academy Award for Best Police Actor. 90% of his movies he plays a cop, and nearly 100% of his movies are great. And I haven't seen Hackman this good since The Firm.

But obviously, not all is good about this movie, I found Monica Belluci to be a little less believable in her role as Hearst's (Hackman) wife. And Thomas Jane (Detective) overacted at times, but these things were hardly noticeable. I just have some problems with the climax, as I could see how many could be confused by it. I think I have a grasp on it, but if you don't you'll probably hate this movie. So on this one I'm gonna go down the middle.
