| Coming into this
movie, I had no clue what to expect. This movie came nowhere near theaters in my area, and
I don't even recall catching any trailers for it. That's rather had to believe,
considering a star of Michael Douglas' clout stars in the film. But this movie had low
buzz everywhere, not just in my shit state: Huskville USA...Iowa. So this week when I got my chew-stained paws on the Wonder Boys
DVD, I couldn't freaken believe how critics weren't hyping this movie through the roof.
Most critics recommended this picture, but didn't nearly push it as much as it deserves.
Before I throw more praise on this picture, here's a quick plot summary:
-Graddy Tripp (Douglas) wrote one of the most influential
novels of his time, but now he's stuck in a seven year struggle to write a worthy
follow-up to it. His colleagues (at the college where Tripp teaches) and even some of his
students think Tripp is washed up. But his writing is just the start of his troubles,
which include: his wife leaving him, a dead dog in his trunk, a great love of marijuana, a
sexy student (Katie Holmes) who has a crush on him, his love for another man's wife
(Frances McDormand), a student (Tobey Maguire) who's writing is overshadowing his, his
editor (Robert Downey, Jr.) throwing drunken parties in his house, and some crazy
bedheaded man who claims Tripp stole his car.
Sound like a huskload of plot in one movie? Well you're
damn right. But somehow Wonder Boys manages to balance them all, entertaining the entire
way. And not just telling a great story, but a truly hilarious one at that. This isn't
gross out Farrelly Brothers style comedy, this is classic comedy that SHOULD appeal to
all.
But not all is perfect about Wonder Boys. After the first
hour, the movie seems to lose some of its fire and wit. But this is only noticeable
because the first hour is SO GOOD! And the theme has to change for the characters to
develop and reach a climax, so it's necessary and well worth it.
In closing, I know this review has been somewhat vague,
but that's my intention. I want you to come into this movie with nothing to spoil it for
you. I want you to have the same clean slate that I had.
Finally, if you want some mindless manure, rent Scary
Movie or Dumb & Dumber, BUT if you want a completely original, hilarious, and
unforgettable movie, check out The Big Lebowski, Nurse Betty, and...WONDER BOYS!
