13 Ways to Bleed Onstage

A Review by

Benzine

Cold released it’s second CD titled “13 Ways to Bleed Onstage” back in June. This is also when I bought the CD, but haven’t got around to reviewing it until now. I think that matters little however being as many of you out there have never heard of Cold. Recently however, they have gone from virtually unknown to on their way to becoming a popular band. Half of their success has to do with the fact that they opened for Staind this past summer on tour. The other half of their success has to do with the band’s music itself. Their musical skill and great, sometimes gritty, lyrics. I think a lot of the fans feel they can relate to the words they sing. Since June, I’ve had plenty of time to listen to this CD and it doesn’t get old. It’s one of my favorites in my collection at the moment, and probably will remain a favorite for many years. Well, anyway here’s how the CD breaks down.

Just Got Wicked – The CD starts of with a good song that is a mix of hard and soft, which seems to be a reoccuring element throughout the CD.   In this track, like most the CD, I have little clue of what the meaning is.  I’m an art student so I could say what I feel the singer is trying to say, so I’ll guess I’ll just do that.  This track seems to be about an act the singer and others committed, and which only he was punished or shunned for…sorry, that’s all I got.

 $3.00

“I can taste your innocence. So young and sweet like mother made ya. Everything froze in ice. These motherf*ckers just got wicked!

She Said – Now this is a great song.  It starts off with just piano music.  After the first track you’re think WTF!!?  But then the trademark darker music sets in. This song talks about a women and her promises to him.  These things promised are just to make him happy, but then she treats him like ish.  Toward the end of the song  he comes to a point after saying “It’s all the little things she said”, where he just says “And I won’t listen”.  Good stuff.

$6.50

“I’ll be here all alone.  Bury everything around me.  Her destination unknown.  I can’t believe how she drowns me.”  “Well I won’t deny it’s all the little things she said.”

No One – If you’ve heard anything from Cold, this is probably it.  I’ve heard this song on the radio since the albums release.  This is the song that basically got me hooked.  It’s got a good beat, and good lyrics, though not discernable at time.   He talks about how he was left isolated(probably not by choice) and how no one was sent to bring him back to the group.  Basically it’s like how, when you were little and you were kicked out of a social group cuz you wore the baggy MC Hammer pants to school  4 years too late.  That’s what this song is about except in a much longer duration.  It’s about not being part of the group your entire life, and losing part of yourself every time you are not included.  He says he’s fine he’s not part of the group, though he secretly wants to not be isolated.  All around a good song.

 $4.00

“Well I can’t ever  really believe.  No one was sent to get me.  And I feel like I’m being erased.  No one got left here.”

“And I’m fine. No one was sent to get me.  And I’m fine.  That no one got left here.”

End of the World -  This is the second radio release from the album and it’s just as good as the first.  This song doesn’t break tradition of the first three with excellent instrumental and lyrical skill.   This song isn’t talking about the end of the world in the sense of the destruction of Earth, it has more to do with the destruction of the world as we know it.  The song talks about diseases that seem to grow in number everyday, the back-stabbing people do to get ahead in life.  The singer then says he wants to torch the world because he’s sick of the way it has become.  He also says he’s happy it’s the end of it all.   A great song, the chorus just keeps repeating in my head, and not in an annoying way, like the time you heard a Nelly song and couldn’t get it out of your head….shudder.

$4.50

Confession   Another solid song.  Can this album be stopped?   This song talks about a woman of great influence(perhaps the singers girlfriend or close friend), who people follow regardless including the singer.  The singer says that she is not as great as she thinks, and that she is just a tool for his expression.   Later on, this woman does something to lose here influence and popularity.  She then fades away and no one cares.  A great song, the beginning reminds me of the movie “The Crow” for some reason, who knows.

$6.00

“Everybody loves stars.  Everyone fell into her world she made here.”

“You think you’re half as good as me. The only thing you’ll ever be. Is just a way for me to bleed on this stage.”

“You threw it all away. My angel died that day.  No one came.  No one cared.”

It’s All Good – Yet another amazing song.  Here the singer talks about a girl he had some type of relationship with, and how she just left.  He says how he could never understand her reasoning for leaving or much else she said.  Yet he waited for her to return.  A good song all around.

$5.00

“Take another motherf*cking hit of LSD.  Let all the love inside the world belong to you.  Well I can’t understand just why you went away.  Too young to understand the pain and bitterness of love.”

“I sat and waited for the day you’d come back home.  But it was all good.”

Send in the Clowns – I haven’t listened to this song as extensively as some others, but it’s still a good track.  I have little clue what this song is about.  It talks about a certain “They” (most likely the clowns another part of the song talks about) and how they ruined everything.  The chorus talks of the ever-changing winds of fame.  Perhaps these clowns are the superstars of the pop world that piss so many of us off.  That’s my interpretation and I’m sticking to it.  Anyway, good song whatever the meaning.

$3.50

“The kept on coming down to this place, cuz I could see it in their eyes.   They made the world a f*cking disgrace, now everything burns cold.”

“I’m talkin’ bout the ever-changing winds of fame I guess it just got cold in here.  It comes full circle.”

“Send in the Clowns.”

Same Drug – The instruments in this song like the others is great.  The music really sets the mood, and makes you feel like maybe how they felt when they wrote the song.  This song talks about a girl who was elevated above him, perhaps in social stature.  He says in different conditions, he never would have loved her.  They were not alike.  He was a struggling musician and she wasn’t.  They had one common thing (the same drug) whether it was actually drugs I don’t know.  However by the end of the song, she is gone and he has grown to love her.  Another impressive song that I could listen to repeatedly and never get sick of.

$5.50

“I bet you’d never come down from your tower for me.”

“It’s nothing much but the same drug everyday.”

“She didn’t come from the same world, see the same things.”

“She did it all the way.  No she’s gone today.  I can’t sleep without her.”

Anti-Love Song – This is a good song.  It’s nothing I’d listen to when I wanted to relax, but a good song non-the-less.  I’m not even gonna try and figure out what the hell this song is about.  It’s just a good song to listen to when you are pissed off basically.   Hey it works for me.

$4.00

“Well I saw the preacher, but I won’t be there on Sunday.  Everyone came again.  Everyone loved her.  No one got use to this.  These motherf*ckers raped me.  Everyone came again and Everyone f*cked you.  It’s not over but it’s over now.”

Witch – Another good song.  This one has some kinda weird ass female chanting in the background.  This song like many others on the CD is about a girl.  This song talks about a girl that left him.  Everyone said that she wasn’t his type anyway and that she’s the one who messed up for leaving him.  He says that she knows about him and his feelings, which is why he’s with her.  It’s a good song with a good beat.  It may not be up to par with some of the other songs on here but it’s still a good song.

$3.50

“I never knew, she’s gone, she’s flown away.  Everyone  said she’s not your kind of girl.”

“I think this f*cking witch knows the way, and everything I feel.”

Sick Of Man – This track has a kinda dreary beat to it, but it’s really no different than any of the other tracks on the CD.  It talks about a girl he says he will never love.  This woman hide her feelings from him and didn’t return his feelings towards her.  I’m not sure where the whole “Sick of Man” title came from.  Of course like most the other songs, maybe I’m all wrong about the meaning.

$3.00

“I said don’t go away turned off the lights and then you.  Said please don’t follow me and you cared.”

“You kept your feelings hidden, like a psycho, burned it all down take me with you.”

Outerspace – I don’t think this track is quite as good as the others, but it’s still decent.  One reason it’s not quite as good is because the music doesn’t seem to be as fitting, I can’t feel the mood as well as the others.  That and the subject seems to be similar to that of “End of the World.”  The singer just says how he doesn’t want to let go of the lives we’ve grown accustomed to, and how he wishes he wasn’t on Earth anymore.  It’s still a good song though, just not the best.

 $2.50

“Back to our lives I’ll never let go.  I want to go to outerspace.”

Bleed – Good frickin’ lord this song kicks all ass! If  “No One is the hook that got me to like Cold, then “Bleed” is what reeled me in and got me to love them.   It’s not fast paced and hard like some of the other songs, it’s not even a mix of hard and soft.  It’s a slow powerful song, and by far my favorite on the album.  The song talks about the things he gave up for his music and how music is his passion.  He uses the word “Bleed” as another word for expression.  Much like the album title.  So the song also talks about how he wants to show the world his feelings through music, and how no one can turn him away from the music he loves.  An excellent song, I’ll be playing it for years to come.

$7.00

“Just like these things I use to love.  Just like the tree that fell I heard it.  If art is still inside, I feel it.  I wanna bleed, show the world all I have inside.  I wanna scream, let the blood flow that keeps me alive.”

“Take all these strings, they call my veins.  And wrap them around, every f*cking thing.”

To sum it up, it’s a great album. If you like music along the lines of Staind and things such as, you’ll love this. I bought this album for $9 and that was when it was released. I know for a fact, you can buy it at Best Buy for $7 now, if not less. Hell, even if you just kinda like this type of music buy this CD it’s a great deal. I’m hoping that enough people start listening to Cold so that they come out with another album, because with their talents, they deserve any future albums and tours they get.

Album worth: $58.00

Album price: $12.32
