Nightmares on Wax

A Review by

Romml

Ok, the name to remember is: George "Herbs" Evelyn. For the length of this cd, he pounds the R & B solidly, with more rhythm than Ron Jeremy. Indeed, he's like a benevolent Electronic God. Here you are, wandering innocently through the land of Electric, naked as naked. And who knows when you could stumble into an atrocity, say for instance the "Baha Men"? (...if i hear "who let the dogs out?" one more time, someone dies...don't let it be you)

This album is not for everyone...it's got strong shades of R & B that even I grin at (I ain't one of KC & Jo-Jo groupies, er, crowd...hehheh,,,no offense intended, Vigilante...Indeed, everyone's got their own hole to dig, so to speak... ;p

Track One: "Les Nuits"
Like a funky monkey, R & B style...'Les Nuits' will have the Ladies swooning over your Groove faster than ...well, something very fast.. anyway...

Herbs shoulda named this album "I like to Score" a la Moby...

Slow bass, some chickee doin' some vocal background moanin',,,all the right ingredients for making Snu-Snu stew, baby...

Worth: Top Dolla'

Track Two: "Morse"
This track has the bass line to end all bass lines...funkier than Shook's whites the day before laundry day...

That's funky.

More of the girly doin' her thing...this song is UNDENIABLY catchy...funky in a late-disco, Aaron Neville kinda way (ok, just kidding about the Aaron
Neville) ...

Worth: 3.00 dollars

Track 3: "Ethnic Majority"
The funky bass continues!!!...adding some horns, Herbs has a Solid Tune, period. This song's got it all: chorus and horns and bass like from a quirky 70's film, more hooks than a bait shop, etc. ,,,

Worth: 2.50

Track 4: "Jorge"
Hmmm...this song is short, only 2.5 minutes long or so...not bad, Herbs, not bad...

The funky bass continues to throb like a sore thumb...but it hurts so good...ohhhh yeah...

Worth: 2.25

Track 5: "Finer"
Just read the title of the track...'nuff said.

Worth: 2.00 (Worth is lower 'cause i don't like vocals...but if you dig the sensuous throaty Vibe of the finer sex, then this track is probably worth 3.00)

Track 6: "Ease Jimi"
This song is undoubtedly the best on the album...with a Funky jazz-saxophone backing so kool it's practically illegal, the craziness is almost too much to handle...a lone guitar helps set the mood perfectly as well. Imagine B.B. King on acid Vs. The Ohio Players...

Herbs goes over the line on this one; this track alone is worth the album,,,

Worth: See Above

Get down wit' you bad self...

Track 7: "Argha Noah"
Some pseudo-science documentary's narrative fell into the hands of NoW, and he makes perfect use of it. The music is very ambient, almost atmospheric...This song drips Trip...

Worth: 3.50 dollars

Track 8: "Fire In The Middle"
One of the best things about this album is the amount of "live" instruments that NoW uses...this album has a very funky, fresh sound to it, using saxophones, guitars, etc. As such, "Fire in the Middle" is a close second to track 6 for first place...

Worth: 4.00 dollars

Track 9: "Survival"
What more can I say that I haven't said already? Get this album!

This track has some nice vocals, astonishingly enough...definitely Mellow to the Yello to the EXTREME...except not to the extreme...

Track 10: "Capumcamp"
This track is a nice way to round out the album...a little more upbeat, relying on the drums more than the backing tracks, it still manages to maintain a sort of coherence with the rest of the tracks. Little sounds
make this track a perfect way to end this cd...

Worth: 1.50

F
inally, Carboot Soul is not for just anyone. The R & B gents will be lookin' to pick up this little number, as it relies on an almost James Brown/Barry White kinda mellow mixology...

Mello and Smooth, like a Good Belgian Ale in the throat...

Album worth: $15.00

Album price: $14.49
