As Depressing as Hell is Hot

A Review by

The Goc

I've been a huge DMX mark since I first got my hands on It's Dark and Hell is Hot. It's all been downhill every since, but even though the other discs have had flaws, there's always been a few gems. Will that be the case on this one? Or does it live up to it's depressing title...

1. SOMETIMES (INTRO) A typical DMX opening with lots of shouting and ranting, but not a beat to speak of. And no mention of a "Great Depression" or anything to give the CD a theme. I'm depressed already.

Track Rating: $0.20

2. SCHOOL STREET Has the beat and fire to be some great ass DMX, but instead he wastes the track by shouting off names of people that we don't know and couldn't give two shits about. It seems to be an attempt to show love to where he came from and prove he was there, but isn't there a more interesting way to accomplish it than basically raping out of the phone book. I husk.

$0.50

3. WHO WE BE Finally a decent track, I know it's only song 3, but usually X grabs you by the balls by now and shows you who the man is. Sure it usually peters off from there, but at least he starts hot. The hook is a little candy ass, but a pretty solid song.

$1.00

4. TRINA MOE Yet again a solid as hell song, but it's ruined by a weak ass hook. Your name is DMX, you constantly have evil dogs around, and you're as intimidating as Big Dick Bubba when you accidentally drop the soap...yet your hooks sound like something Nelly would put out. But aside from that...nice song.

"Fifteen Million...NaNaNaNaNa!"

$1.50

5. WE RIGHT HERE This is the first single off the album, and I have no choice but to admit I'm digging it. I've heard many people complain that it's way too similar to some stuff out there by Puffy and others, but it's still pretty damn catchy. I'm not saying it's anything I'm going to remember in a few months though. Catchy, but not addictive.

$2.00

6. BLOODLINE ANTHEM– The way this track starts off, you'll think you inadvertently put in a Kelly Price CD (ha Vigi) or something. It's some screechy ass females breaking it down, and is certainly nothing associated with the testicle-holder DMX. You'll find out that they just supply the hook, but good gawd they're annoying as Shooks when you have a headache.  Steer clear of this track if you're easily annoyed.

$0.50

7. SHORTY WAS DA BOMB This track tells the tale of how X got a female pregnant, or actually how she tricked him into knocking her up. She's driving him nuts, but he's still hooked. I'm not usually into a song like this, but it's just too damn well made. Easily the best track so far.

"Only one fucking night, and I was drunk..ah!"

$2.50

8. DAMIEN III - This is hands down the track I was looking forward to the most. I love every Damien track so far, and this one doesn't break the trend in the least. The first one is hands down a classic, and this one isn't even in the same ballpark but it's still good ish.

"What the fuck you forgot about me?"

"Didn't give me a shot out on your last album, what you hate me?"

$3.00

9. WHEN I'M NOTHING (feat. Stephanie Mills) – Another R&B style hook, come on X? This might equal mass appeal, but he's definitely shitting on the marks that got hooked on It's Dark and Hell is Hot. I'm embarrassed to bump this, it sounds like I'm listening to some cake crap. That should NEVER be a problem on a DMX CD...ever.

$0.50

10. I MISS YOU (feat. Faith Evans) – This is a heartfelt song from DMX to his grandmother. He's constantly talked about her for the last couple years, so obviously she was a big part of his life. I can't find anything wrong with this song, I have some feelings after all.

$1.25

11. NUMBER 11 - Nothing too great here, but also nothing too bad. Just an average DMX track. As you can tell the title is pretty creative, haha.

"X got a rep, niggas trust my name"

$1.00

12. PULL UP (SKIT) – Worthless, a few sound effects of people pulling up and loading some guns. Does this really need to be a separate track?

$0.00

13. I'M A BANG – This is hardcore DMX that I've been waiting 13 tracks for. It's pure energy, even though it's nothing new or emotional like older X tracks. Good shit though.

"Niggas couldn't wear my shoes, the places that I walk, most cats couldn't bare my dues."

"Keep the bullshit for the rodeo!"

$2.50

14. PULL OUT (SKIT) – This is a continuation of the previous skit, but now it just has some sounds of them leaving in their car. WTF? Pointless again.

$0.00

15. YOU COULD BE BLIND (feat. Mas) – Pretty damn good track even though it has another R&B style hook. I know I've ranted on that aspect of this CD way too many times, so I'll save you this time. This time the formula actually seems to work though.

$1.25

16. THE PRAYER IV – Every album has had a prayer and this one is no different. The first CD's prayer was emotional as hell, and I don't know anyone who wasn't digging it. This one isn't as touching as some of those that came before it, but you knew it was coming. You don't go to Nascar and not expect to see cars, so I guess I can't find any fault in this.

$0.50

17. A MINUTE FOR YOUR SON – This is one massively long track, but in reality it's not one song it's actually 4 or so. The first one is a religious themed track from X to God, and as always he makes a religious track sweet as hell. The next track is a posse cut that sounds like it would be better place on a Ruff Ryders album. The other rappers on the album are introduced as the "Bloodline" kennel. They rap over classic beats, and are pretty damn impressive. After they get done, DMX takes over with the track many of you have heard that's often called "Problems." And it's still not over from there. A solid track all the way through, I just hate how they do bonus tracks these days. This last track has just way too much crammed into one number one your track choices.

"Just call me god on beats."

"They kept me on the husk, like Whitney's drug habit."

$3.00

As you can see, the CD got a pretty decent rating, but all in all it's a major disappointment. I can't see myself listening to this one for more than a few weeks. Aside from the Damien track there's nothing that would even have a shot on a future DMX - Greatest Hits CD. It's a CD full of filler, and if I wasn't such a huge DMX fan, this CD would probably be rated below it's sale price. X got fans because of "Dark," so why does "The Great Depression" sound nothing like that hip-hop masterpiece?

Album worth: $21.20

Album price: $15.99
