A Review by

Benzine

P.O.D. (Which stands for Payable On Death) is back with their 6th CD. With their first couple albums kept mainly underground, after signing with a major record label, they became better known. So this is considered by many to be their sophomore album. Before reviewing this CD, I knew a little about P.O.D. I had heard of them and had heard some of their music on the radio. What I didn’t know was that this group is a Christian rock group! Now I’m sure some of you have lost any interest in this CD. As Bart Simpson said, "All the best rock bands are affiliated with Satan." Usually I’d agree with anything Bart says, but I’m gonna have to disagree with this one. I found this to be a great album. Well, without further ado, here’s how the CD breaks down.

Set it Off - This is a pretty decent song. It seems to be about the problems the band had to face trying to make it in this pop dominated music world we live in. However, I think the song is more about standing up for yourself, and fighting for what you believe in. But what do I know.

$1.50

"We lay in wait, don’t hesitate. When opportunity knocks, break the locks and rush the gates."

"Rise! Let your spirit fly. Rise! Stand up for yourself. Rise! Hold your head up high. Our time has come. Set it off."

Alive – This is the first radio release from the group(At least I believe it is), and it’s quite a good song. It’s not too hard to read into the meaning behind this song. It’s just about living life to it’s fullest, seizing the moment, and things to that effect.

$3.00

"Everyday is a new day. I’m thankful for every breath I take. I won’t take for granted. So I learn from my mistakes."

"I feel so alive for the very first time. I can’t deny you. I feel so alive for the very first time. And I think I can fly."

Boom – A great song, very energetic. It has a good rock/rap combo going on. This song talks about how people talked ish to them and said they would never make it. The chorus says no matter what you think about them, here they come.

$4.00

"I never knew a kid like me, could take his mic around the world and flash the big S.D. And rock the masses, from Madrid to Calabassas Tijuana, Mexico bootleg demos in Tokyo."

"Boom! Here comes the boom! Ready or not, here comes the boys form the South. Boom! Here comes the Boom! How you like me know?"

Youth of the Nation – I really liked this song. It’s a change from the first three tracks, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s a narrative about a couple different kids. It tells the story of a kid, who for whatever reason, shot one of his classmates, a girl who had no self-esteem and looked for companionship , but was just used by the guys she hung around, and a kid who tried to become accepted, but never was so he took his life. A good social commentary in song form. If T.V. ads don’t work, put the message in song form, then the kids will listen to it.

$5.00

Celestial – This is just an instrumental track. That’s not a bad thing though, cuz it’s a quite good instrumental track. Too bad it’s fairly short at about a minute and a half. It’s a good change of pace from some of the harder tracks before it.

$1.50

Satellite – This is a fairly good song. It’s about an important person in the singer’s life(a girlfriend perhaps) who is an important focal point in his life. He says this person makes him smile when he’s upset, and she knows him almost as well as he knows himself. A good song all around.

$3.00

"I wonder how clear it must look from there to here. No obstruction this selfish corruption, all in this atmosphere."

"As I look up to the sky today. Well I can see you looking down on me. It brings a smile to my face again. Satellite."

Ridiculous – This song is pretty pimpy. It’s different than the others, cuz it’s got a reggae beat to it. It’s about all those who talk ish about the group, and how people don’t like the group because they aren’t mainstream. This is a good song with a good beat. I could drive around listening to this bobbing my head with the music….not that I do that or anything….

$3.00

"Skillfully tested, rhythmically possessed with rhymes. And when it was time, Jah gave me that mic after he blessed it. He said share the loving, prepare them for the Second Coming. Beware of the false prophets, because they got my people bugg’n.."

Dem test my crew, but em can’t get with this. Dem all the same, talking wickedness. Your styles been played, and I’m already sick of it. Them so ridiculous, them so ridiculous."

The Messenjah – The song starts off with a nice guitar solo, but then picks up it’s pace and becomes a little harder. This song is about how the singer considers himself responsible for delivering a message. Though the song makes a couple of biblical references, I don’t think the singer believes he is any type of prophet. Then again maybe he does, in which case, he’s delirious and needs to lay off the acid or something. Most likely though, he’s just talking about his lyrics and his music. He is passing on his beliefs using music as a medium for that.

$2.00

"I message, written in rhyme prophetic. Teachers amongst the skeptics and guiding the misdirected. Infected with their lies and their alibis. With their third eye blind out of line, they try to prophesy."

"This I pledge, and I’ll take to my death. I’ll lay my life down for you and die over again."

You can bet your life on my words and everything I said. You can’t take away my love for this sacrifice. Even if I die tonight, if I die tonight."

Guitarres de Amor – Another instrumental track. This isn’t quite as good as Celestial, but it’s not too bad. It’s title means "Guitars of Love" so that should be some indication that the guitar solo will have some Spanish sound to it, which it does. This almost seems to be a set up for the following track "Anything Right", and contrasts it greatly. This track like Celestial, could have been better if it were made at least a couple minutes longer.

$1.00

Anything Right - This song starts off at a slower pace than some of the other songs, talking about how he wasn’t good enough a person and could never please them. Then he gets to the chorus and goes nuts. Whoever this person is, they really pissed him off, cuz he doesn’t really sing the chorus, more like screams it. I really like this song. Sometimes we all feel this way. We are upset at our girlfriends/ boyfriends, bosses, and teachers. This is a good song to listen to after a tough day. Hell, this is a good song to listen to anytime.

$4.50

Ghetto – This is another song I really enjoy. It is much slower and not nearly as hard as the other songs on the CD. It talks about the differences the world faces, the fact that we disagree on nearly every aspect of life. He says that he believes that we can all get along as long as we don’t give in to hate. This is by far one of my favorite tracks on the CD.

$5.00

"We might never really agree on anything about the lives we live. Between you and me so differently. We don’t always see things the dame. We should agree to disagree, if we meet at love we can work it out."

"I believe you and I will overcome. I believe you and I believe in love."

Masterpiece Conspiracy – This is yet another good song. It talks once again about how the feel society sees them. That is as outsiders, rebels, or as they put it, a virus. This song has a good section of just basically music at the end with guitar and drums, vocals, but it’s just screaming so that doesn’t really count. I thought the title was cool when I first saw it, now I know that the music that goes with the title is just as good.

$3.50

Without Jah Nothin’ – Hmmmm……This song is much different than the rest. For one thing, it has no real discernable lyrics. Secondly though some of the other songs were fast, they weren’t nearly as fast as this. This is probably what it sounds like if you took a CD and condensed it into about a three minute session, then played it. I tried to listen and see if I could pick out any words, and I could, but nothing of any significance. It’s like the singer had a fit of Teret’s Syndrome and they recorded it. Songs like this just ain’t my cup of tea, but they switch it up about half way through the song to a more reggae beat. They still don’t have lyrics you can understand, but at least the music is better.

$1.00

Thinking About Forever – A great song both in subject and the music. It’s the slowest and softest song on the CD. It’s basically (with exception to the beginning of the song) just an acoustic guitar and the lead singer. It talks about the loss of the singer’s mother, and how he tries to honor her memory with what he does in life. I really enjoyed this song. I kind of wish there were more like it on the CD, but this is a nice change to the CD as well as a nice addition.

$6.00

"Time goes by and God knows I try to carry on with life. Decide not to hide feelings inside, even though they hurt. Sometimes I forget to remember you. It’s easy to lock away the pains, don’t want to relive it through."

I’m thinking about forever, missing your. I know you’re so much better, we made it through."

Portrait – This song isn’t too bad. It’s kinda half and half for me. There are sections of slow acoustic type music like in "Thinking About Forever", then there are sections of screaming that I really don’t care for. Still the song has its moments and the if you actually read the lyrics, which you basically have to cuz you can’t understand the singer at most points, they are quite good. This song shows very strongly the Christian influence that exists in many other of the band’s songs.

$2.00

"You’re not who they say you are. They made you the enemy."

"Some people call you father. Maybe you could set me free. These people hate each other. But you’ve always been there for me."

In conclusion, this is a very good CD. I would have never listened to it, if I had not agreed to write this review, but I’m glad I did. I found this to be a very good CD. It’s got a fairly good variety of different rock types. It’s got rock/rap combo similar to Limp Bizkit and such groups. It’s got rock/reggae combo, and some nice softer rock type stuff. After listening to some of the songs, it’s hard to believe this is a Christian rock group. But if this is where Christian music is head, looks like I’ll start going to church.

Album worth: $46.00
