| Ok, despite better
judgment, we're going to attempt to review the latest Stone Temple Pilots release
"Shangri-La Dee Da." Neither of our musical tastes typically cater to STP, but
no one on the GYEAH staff stood up and took the reigns of this review. So when in limbo,
it usually gets scooped up by myself (Goc). I've taken Jenna (my lady friend) along for
the ride yet again. I figure my mind isn't capable of doing a just review of STP, but
perhaps with us together, we = one competent reviewer. So bare with us, as we embark on
Shangri-La Dee Da.... 1. DUMB
LOVE There's no intro, nothing
of the sort. This CD starts off with guitars flowing within seconds. It's definitely an
interesting approach, considering the rap CDs I'm used to with pointless introduction
skits (save for Eminem). This song sounds very 80's ish though. I just can't stand it, not
a good start for the CD.
Track Rating: $0.25
2. DAYS OF THE WEEK This is good ish. "Tuesday shoot
me in the head." On this one, STP go down the days of the week, telling their
feelings about each one. "Monday, I'm back from the day." This song is very
quotable, but is a lot more radio friendly than I expected from this album. But don't get
me wrong, I'm not saying that is a bad thing. I dig this track.
$2.00
3. COMA Any song that is titled
"Coma," already sounds good to me. This one is pretty damn good. I could
see Hoss downloading it to my computer and bumping it at one of our drunken parties. But
alas, it will already be on the harddrive, much to his surprise. And it's going to stay
there. "It's just a game and no one is playing."
$2.00
4. HOLLYWOOD BITCH This song starts out loud and pissy, just like I was expecting.
But the chorus is a little too singy, but the guitar work is straight flava. "She's
from the west side, she's looking pretty thin." Weiland and Co. tell it how it is on
this track...very nice.
$0.75
5. WONDERFUL Wow, now this is quite a switch. The
CD started out loud as hell, and this is slower than a snail with a bum, umm...leg?
Anyways, this is still a decent track. With Weiland off the drugs, this is more the style
I expected really. It's WAY too short to be good though. Just as you get into it, it's
over.
$0.20
6. BLACK AGAIN This is an emotional track, that is pretty depressing. In it, STP sing
about a depressed female. "She can't eat, she can't sleep." It sounds like
nothing I really want a part of though. Life is bad enough how it is, I don't need music
pulling me down. But some will really like it, just not me. But I'll take that into
consideration.
$0.50
7. HELLO IT'S LATE A soft spoken ballad, perfect for the radio and selling records. Problem is
it's just not catchy enough. It's heartfelt though, and I know people will be playing it
late at night as they get all melancholy.
$0.75
8. TOO COOL QUEENIE - I just can't get into this one. One too many songs that sound the same in a
row. It's got some funky guitar action, but it's just not my cup of tea.
$0.25
9. REGENERATION Shoot me, I just can't get into this song. It seems to go on for
damn near forever. STP marks will probably maim me, but I just can't stand this song. It
starts out with promise and just gets too repetitive and hard on the ears.
$0.10
10. BI-POLAR BEAR The music
didn't sound like it was going together right. Jenna thinks it sounds as if the notes were
off. I couldn't get into it either. Sorry STP fans. You can hate me now.
$0.10
11. TRANSMISSIONS FROM A LONELY ROOM - Sounds like something you've all heard before. It's alot better than the
last few tracks though. Thank god for that.
$0.75
12. A SONG FOR SLEEPING Believe it or not, this track put Jenna straight to sleep. It's a great
slow song, and that's proof enough that it's soothing. Hell, it lives up to it's title at
least, hehe. But honestly, this is a pretty damn decent song, if you like slow, you'll dig
it.
$1.40
13. LONG WAY HOME A fitting end for the CD, it started off hard and got slower with each
progressing track. More emotion, less guitar action. A good way to end the CD, although
it's not the greatest track.
$0.50.
This CD took alot out of me. After a
while all rock just seems to blend together. If you disagree with this review, by all
means tell us about it. Hit up the GYEAH.com message board and tell us Weiland is the man,
and that we don't know good rock from that stinky hole in our ass. Hell, write up a review
of the next rock CD headed towards the market, become GYEAH.com's rock icon, we won't
complain. That's all I have to say, now it's your turn. Hit
up the message board! Tell me I'm a dumbass, or agree with me that rock is dead.
