| July 2001 is the
month that DPG make their triumphant return back to the rap scene. It seems like it's been
forever since Dogg Food, but this month DPG is back in full force with a new group CD and
now a Kurupt solo effort. Is this as good as the DPG of old? Let's check out the album
track by track... 1. BLAST OFF
INTRO This intro starts off with
the 2001: Space Oddyssey theme along with a narrator and some eerie music. A narrator
breaks down the story of a space colony made soley for black people. Pretty funky, a
little too wordy for Kurupt's style I think though, but damn the end feeds into the next
track like butter.
Track Rating: $0.20
2. SPACE BOOGIE (feat. Nate Dogg)
Straight "DPG gangsta shit," there's no other way to describe this one. Kurupt
kicks his usual rhymes and Nate Dogg sews it up like only he can. Instant classic.
"Unless you're stuck up in a time warp, you
already know about the west."
$4.50
3. HATE ON ME (feat. Soopafly & Damani) Is it possible that there is a person
on this planet who sounds as smooth as Soopafly? Good god, this guy is the rapper version
of Nate Dogg, and will always be TWICE as smooth as Snoop no matter how silky he tries to
be. The hook is pretty boring and the beat gets a little annoying, but still decent.
"If rapping was a bitch, you'd have no pussy.
Maybe tongue kissing, but no pussy."
$1.00
4. ON DA GRIND (feat. Daz) If anyone got
their hands on the never-released Daz Dillinger CD "R.A.W." Believe it or not,
this was the best damn track on the whole CD. I've been exposed to this song for about 6
months now, but it's still very solid. The beats and rhymes flow perfectly on this one.
$2.00
5. IT'S OVER (feat. Natina Reed)
On this one Kurupt brought along his soon to be wife, Natina Reed from the R&B group
Blaque. I've heard alot of people pissing on what they call a "corny" beat. I
know it's corny as hell, and there's no message here, but it's still catchy and pretty
good ish. I even think Natina's rapping parts are as good or better than most full-time
female MC's. Not that that's saying much though.
$2.50
6. CAN'T GO WRONG (feat. DJ Quik & Butch Cassidy) As soon as this one starts off, the funkyness and instruments instantly
signal that DJ Quik is somewhat involved. Either he's in the studio, on the mic, or just
walking by the damn studio...funky beats follow the bastard. Let it be known though, the
more Quik CD's that come out, the less of a fan I become. He's rapping like it's still the
80's...wake up man. Butch Cassidy sings the hook, and is his usual silky smooth self. He
needs to make a crazy tag team with Nate Dogg called "Forever Silky." They could
sing the panties off a nun. But anyways, decent track nothing special unless you love
Quik.
"We started this pussy shit, and
these the motherfucking hoes we get?"
$1.50
7. ON, ONSITE (feat Lil 1/2 Dead) I
honestly bet I'm the only bastard out there that bought 1/2 Dead's first solo CD, back in
the pre-Napster days. If that thing sold more than 10 copies, I'd be fuckishly surprised.
It was pretty mediocore, just like this track. Well anyways, this song is about how Kurupt
& Co. will pounce on you as soon as they see you...wheee, hehe. Nothing special here,
you won't dislike it, but you won't be requesting it either.
$1.00
8. SUNSHINE (feat. Jon B) - This track starts with an
annoying as little skit, then the beat kicks in and it doesn't get much better. I'm sorry
but to me, it doesn't seem like Kurupt is rapping to the beat half the time. This sounds
like a No Limit track. Jon B handles the expected sing songy hook, and I'm sorry but I'm
not digging R&B + rap songs unless they're perfect. This one is not. Any song that has
"cutie pie" in the hook = going to get no goc airplay.
$0.50
9. THE HARDEST (feat. Xzibit, MC Ren, Nate Dogg) If
there was ever one reason to purchase this CD...THIS IS IT! I think this was supposed to
be another NWA track with Cube & Ren and Dre behind the boards and Kurupt and Nate
adding their touch, but instead Xzibit has taken Cube's place. Whoever is around...this
one is another INSTANT F-ING CLASSIC. Ren sounds amazingly flava-filled, the best since
Chin Check and Xzibit is his constant solid self. There's not enough good that can be said
about this song, just get your hands on it...NOW!
"Kurupt, tell your mom to tiptoe when she
passes my door."
$6.00
10. GANGSTA'S (feat. Daz) - This isn't anything
special, it sounds oddly like something I've heard before. The raps and beat are pretty
boring, but I love the singy hook, it's just different than most. But it's the only thing
you'll remember about this song I'm afraid.
$0.75
11. BRING BACK THAT G SHIT (feat. Snoop & Eastsiderz) - Finally
Snoop sounds good! About 80% of the time these days I wanta slap Snoop whenever I hear him
featured on a song. He uses the same rhymes every time and just tries to be the smoothie
Q. This seems like it should be on a Snoop album, but it really doesn't matter. This is a
solid ass song, but listen to Snoop's rhyme...he needs to find some new subject matter.
Murder Was the Case style, Please!
$1.75
12. LAY IT ON BACK (feat. Fred Durst, DJ Lethal, Nate Dogg) I
know what everyone is thinking...Fred Durst rapping again, WTF? Yeah he really needs to
stick to what made him famous, but everyone is pulling crap like that these days.
Personally I still like quite a few Bizkit rock tracks, but the rap stuff grows old fast.
Durst just sounds way too unpolished, but this song still is saved from the ashes thanks
to Nate Dogg. Durst needs to quit saying "butt" and "smurf" in his
rhymes and that would be a good start. I love though how Kurupt can rip off his patented
"What's up Fred?"'s with an actual "Fred" on the track.
$2.25
13. JUST DON'T GIVE A FUCK (feat. DJ Lethal) On this track
Kurupt basically says he doesn't give a flizuck what anyone says about him or his beefs,
specifically the one with DMX. Apparently for some reason Kurupt is looking to squash the
DMX feud. What I find pretty hilarious is that this track features DJ Lethal, yet Kurupt
says the quote I posted a few lines down. "Dont say shit about Eminem" or Kurupt
will basically mess you up. So does messing someone up mean putting them on their next
album...sleepless. But other than that...very decent yet unoriginal track.
"Don't say shit about Eminem, Snoop, or
Dre."
$2.00
14. AT IT AGAIN Where in the freaken world did this one come from? This is straight old
school rapping style with a 70's disco sounding beat. Sounds like something from the Sugar
Hill Gang or something in that vein. I'm not a big fan of nostalgic rap like this, it just
doesn't sound right with Kurupt singing it. I could see Shooks loving this one though, and
he's not the only idiot in the world...so I have to take that into account.
$1.25
15. KURUPTION (feat. Everlast) Kurupt was on Everlast's
last CD, so it only had to be expected that Whitey would repay the favor and be on Space
Boogie. This track starts off with various news clippings centering around violence, the
government, and children. Then Whitey takes over with his country singing style. As much
as everyone wants to hate Everlast these days, just because Eminem does - I can stand the
bastard. I don't want to read about him or talk to him, but his songs are decent and a
change of the pace. This message-themed song seems out of place on the CD, but if it
weren't for Everlast's repetitive hook it would be a great track. Still good stuff though.
$1.50
16. DA WORLD (feat. Daz) Just your typical DPG
track, nothing special to end the CD. If I was making a CD, I'd put something solid as
hell as the last track to get people to want to start back over at the beginning, but this
track isn't going to quite do that. Yet again, it's solid...but not stellar.
$1.00
This CD isn't going to catapult Dogg
Pound and Kurupt back to the top of the rap game, but it's definitely solid and a must own
to any rap fan. Personally I think it's on the same level as "Streets Is a
Mutha," and that's saying quite a bit. There's quite a bit of filler, but there are
enough gems to make it worth your time. Go on a 2001: Space Oddyssey with Kurupt, you
won't be disappointed.
