Sparkle & Fade

A Review by

Charmel

Everclear’s sophomore effort comes out strong with a solid collection of songs with heart felt lyrics and some catchy lead guitar riffs.  Unleashed on the public in 1995, Sparkle & Fade’s Heroin Girl, Santa Monica, and Heartspark Dollarsign would eventually gain varying degrees of success as radio singles.   However, I feel that the strength of Sparkle & Fade lies in some of it’s non-commercial successes, “You Make Me Feel Like A Whore,” “Pale Green Stars,” and “Summerland.”  Along with one of my favorites, “My Sexual Life,” bringing up the end of the CD, the foursome of songs provide a really good backup to the three songs picked to be singles for radio play.  The CD varies in styles to punk rock type palm muted backgrounds to some great acoustic sounds in the slower songs.

Track Listings:

1. ELECTRA MADE ME BLIND Electra starts the album out with a bang with a catchy lead riff and Art’s screaming voice coming at you. A solid song throughout with a good solo in the middle.

"Living isn’t a simple thing. I know. No one said it’s supposed to be. I know."

Track Rating: $0.75

2. HEROIN GIRL One of Everclear’s first hits, Heroin Girl comes from Art’s former use and his brother’s OD. The song’s hook comes from Art’s life, the “Just another overdose!” line stems from Art’s brother’s death and a policeman’s remark in front of his mother. Overall a good song with a lot of emotion attached.

"They found her out in the fields about a mile from home. Her face was warm from the sun but her body was cold."

$1.50

3. YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A WHORE One of the more simple lyrical efforts on the album, the song comes across with a good mix of imagery and a solid riff through the verse. The last variation on the chorus adds in a bit more vocals that really bring out the emotion of the song. Despite the title, it always makes me feel good.

"You treat me like I am on fire, like I’m something to eat. You make me hate what I see when I see me."

$1.00

4. SANTA MONICA The real standout hit from the album, Santa Monica features one of the most catchy riffs throughout the song I’ve heard in a long time. With a simple progression and lyrics focusing on loving someone so much that you’re willing to forget the rest of the world, Santa Monica really comes through with its catchy lyrics and upbeat theme.

"We can live beside the ocean. Leave the fire behind. Swim out past the breakers. Watch the world die."

$3.00

5. SUMMERLAND Possibly some of the best lyrics in the album, Summerland brings across a yearning for a change, trying to find a new place where you can be what you want to. A solid track to follow Santa Monica.

"I think I lost my smile, I think you lost yours too. We have lost the power to make each other laugh."

$0.65

6. STRAWBERRY – Another addiction based song, Strawberry sounds a lot like what anybody struggling to stay on the wagon thinks to themselves, making it very easy to relate to. Really the first slower tempo song of the album without much of a vocal crescendo. Solid lyrics and real emotion drive this song through.

"Don’t fall down now, you will never get up. Don’t fall down now."

$0.55

7. HEARTSPARK DOLLARSIGN After a slight lull, Everclear comes back swinging with a great song dealing with interracial love. The catchy lead in riff gives way to a good palm muted verse behind some of the best lyrics of the album. I’m still stupefied by the title, but one thing is for sure, this song rocks some boo-tay.

"The world resolves into a death’s head grin because I walk with pride with a black girlfriend."

$2.25

8. THE TWISTINSIDE - The album slows down a bit again to bring out another well written song. Fighting the grim reality of having to grow up, the song starts off with a nice riff and eventually builds up to Art screaming out, “I can’t take it, I give up.” Of course, it has to be heard to be appreciated, but Twistinside’s lyrics stand out alone.

"I’m gonna get a new tattoo, black and stretching around my arm like a life that is visible and real. I know, I know it’s stupid and immature, I just want to give shape to the face that twists inside both you and me."

$1.00

9. HER BRAND NEW SKIN – Fast and hard filler. Not Everclear’s greatest, but at 2:02, it doesn’t wear out it’s welcome.

"She is everything that I’m not, strong and happy with the sound of the rhythm inside."

$0.50

10. NEHELEM – Another short song at only 1:58, Nehelem comes and ends quick, but manages to deliver some solid lyrics in-between pulsing guitar riffs. There’s also a really nice accentuation of the vocals near the end that gives the song a hook.

"Yeah, I know you need to break away. I don’t give a f**k about what those people say. I hope you find everywhere you go all the good things that you need to know."

$1.00

11. QUEEN OF THE AIR - A really disturbing song about a reoccurring nightmare that a three year old boy has after seeing his mom commit suicide. Another song that builds up in intensity throughout, QotA brings out a haunting message of the realization that someone you never knew was someone who should’ve been one of the most important people in your life.

"High on the bridge I seen her dancing, waving to me there. She smiled and raised her head, then she took to the air."

$0.75

12. PALE GREEN STARS – About the slowest song on the CD, “Pale Green Stars” is also one of the very best. With great acoustic guitar work throughout and a really personal message about a family breaking apart and a father’s emotions as his daughter watches him leave. For my money, this is the real hook for the album.

"Scared little girl watching Aladdin on TV. Amanda always cries when you yell at me. Yeah, please don’t yell at me."

"It’s so hard on a young girl. She thinks it’s all her fault when it all goes wrong. It’s hard on a grown man too see my baby crying at the window calling out my name."

Rating: $4.00

13. CHEMICAL SMILE – Some more hard and fast filler in-between to of the best songs on the CD, “Chemical Smile” offers up 1:49 of pulsing guitar music and Art trying to yell through the riff. Decent lyrics and some good technical skill, but not a heck of a lot to offer.

"She says Jesus owes her money, she says that the angles are her friends. What in the hell does that mean?"

$0.35

14. MY SEXUAL LIFE – To wrap it all up, “My Sexual Life” comes through with another catchy riff and a sleepy sounding Art singing out about the rigors of having an active sexual life in a small town. I don’t really know exactly why I like this song, I just know that I like it.

"You always say you never f**k around, you say this town is just plain full of liars. Yeah you always say you never f**k around, hearing you talk just makes me tired."

$2.25

Overall, this is possibly one of Everclear’s top two albums. With a good array of commercial successes and some great songs to back up the big ones, the first release under the Capitol Records label provides the listener with a consistent diet of good lyrics, catchy riffs, and of course, Art’s patented “yeah’s” and “no-oo’s.”

Album worth: $19.55

Album price: $12.99
