Still Surviving.

A Review by

Vigilante

I loved Destiny's Child when they first came out. I heard their first track "Killing Time" on the "Men in black" soundtrack, and was sold from then on. They then came with the hot single "No, no, no", and the world recognized them. The girls follow up album was a huge success, and was one of the greatest r&b album of all time. With a summer hit on the soundtrack "Charlie's Angels" the girls are back for their third album. Some of the names have change, but the sound remains the same.

Independant Women Pt. 1  Do I truly need to explain this song to anyone? If you owned a radio at all this past year, you've heard this song....over, and over, and over, and over. When I first heard this song, I thought it was a piece of crap, my opinion of it hasn't changed that much, but I must say it is pretty addictive. I just hate when artists put songs that were on a soundtrack on their album. Is it that hard to come up with a entirely new track?

Survivor   First 'official' single from this album, as well as the title track. Yet another track you'd have to lack a pulse if you haven't heard it yet. I am growing rather tired of this DC songs that talk about how they will survive, and how independant they are. Can we sing about something else ladies? Anyway, this track is pretty sweet, but will become an annoying ass pain after the 100th time. Oh, will someone tell me what's the point of Michelle's little part at the end? Anyone?

$1.25

Bootylicious From the title of this track, you can already tell this is going to be a silly ass song. Although this song is a silly ass dance track, the beat is off the wall. And well, quite frankly Beyonce is right. Her body is too bootylicious for me. Even though the truth is being spoken, I am not feeling this track.

$.60

Nasty Girl This track hits home on three bases. Hot ass song, humorous, and the damn truth. Here they talk about some Nasty ass girl that dresses like a whore, and how she should do something about herself. I am a little questionable at the end of this song...are we going to the jungle or something?? Oh well, the track is till bangin.

"Nasty put some clothes, I told you don't walk out the house without your close on. Girl what you thinkin bout lookin that to' down. These men don't want no hot female, thats been around the block female. You're nasty girl." - Destiny's Child.

$2.75

Fancy On this track, Dc  talks about how a girl who is trying to be their friend is trying to steal everything from them...identity, men, all of it. This song had to grow on me. The lyrics are what make this song work, cause the hook wasn't working for me. But together, they work pretty well.

$1.50

Apple Pie A La Mode – On this track, the girls sing about how a guy is like a piece of Apple Pie A La Mode. This song seems like a song that would be sung by Jill Scott. I don't care much for her, nor do I care for this corny song.

$.15

Sexy Daddy Another dance track on this album, and on this one the girls talk about how they will wait with their girls at the club until their sweet sexy daddy comes in. I remember when these girls used to sing about real stuff on their first album.

$.05

Perfect Man- AHHHHHHH!!! I HATE when artists put a track that was on a soundtrack (in this case "Romeo Must Die") on their own album. This song is hot as hell too, but its nothing I haven't heard  over a year ago. Anyway, here the girls talk about how they've spotted the perfect man, and had no clue what to say.

"When I met the perfect man. I didn't speak when I had the chance. I didn't know exactly what to say at the restaurant the other day." Destiny's Child

$1.50

Independant Women pt.2 – I like this version 500 times more than the original one. The beat is hot, almost like a freakish cartoon. Of course, they still talk about how independant they are, but its like a completely different song except for the hook. Thank god!!

$2.50

Happy Face – This is a beautiful song, and tells how just waking up in the morning every day is reason enough to be happy. How true, and I think I'm going to prance and skip around to this track every morning.

"I woke up this morning, the sunshine was shining. I put on my happy face. I'm living, I'm able. I breathing, I grateful to put on my happy face." -Destiny's Child

$3.00

Dance With Me - Yet another dance track, how many of these can this album have??!? No matter, this track isn't as annoying as the others and is a lot more laid back. On this track, the girls talk about how they want a boy that's checking them out to dance with them.

$1.25

My Heart Still Beats – WOW, so they do still sing ballads?!? I'll be damned. Through all this pop ish they've been doing, I was beginning to forget that Beyonce and the girls have some of the prettiest voices known to man. On this track, the girls sing about how their heart still beats because they are still being loved. Great ish!

"If you could trust me, teach me, never let go of me, because you have for me...my heart still beats.

$3.00

Emotion – Another ballad? Heart be still. Another track that allows the girls show off their vocal capabilites, and more than just Beyonce.  On this track, the girls talk about how that now that they need their loved one, they are nowhere to be found. There emotions are taking them over, and that   there is no one else in the world to love them.

$2.00

Brown Eyes – Alright, I'm beginning to question who ordered the tracks on this album. Why do all the ballads occur at the end? Anyway, another beautiful track that the girls eat up like butta. The soft beat with the lyrics is truly moving, as the track builds intensity for the build up at the end.

" I know that he loves me, cause its obvious. I knopw that he loves me, cause its me he trusts. And he's missin me, if he's not kissin me. And when he looks at me, his brown eyes tell his soul."

$3.50

Dangerously In Love – Another ballad, and what makes Vigilante here regain his respect for this group. The girls talk about how they can't go on without the love of their man...now that's some dangerous love.

$2.00

Story of Beauty –  Whoa!! This song is deep. After "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Survivor", I didn't think these girls had this type of material in them. This tracks talks about how a girl should't blame herself for herself being raped by her stepdad, no one believing her, and ending up in this vicious cycle of abusive men along the lines of her step dad. They tell her that one day it will be ok, and to remember that she is beautiful.

"Please dry your eyes young girl, don't cry you're beautiful. Its not your fault young girl, don't cry you're beautiful. You're not the one to blame, soon it will be ok. One day you're realize your beauty." - Destiny's Child

$4.00

Gospel Medley – No beat necessary, as the girls harmonize their thanks to the man that made it all possible. Its obvious that these three girls voices were meant to be together.

$2.00

Outro – Nice way to end the album. The girls talk to each other about how much they love each other, how nothing will break them apart, and how God placed these 3 girls together. Hearing this entire album, I'm starting not to doubt it.

$1.75

As this album went further and further along, I began to love it more an more. Their second album tended to use beats, and quick lyrics to get their songs across. On this album (with the exception of a few 'pop' tracks) the girls voices tend to be the backbone, and make their ballads some of the most wonderful things brought  to the ear. I didn't think I would be able to enjoy a DC album more than I did "Writings on the Wall", but "Survivor" shows that these girls are more than just singers...their artists. If you're a fan of these girls, or love some great r&b and soul; skip a few tracks on this album and enjoy.

Album worth: $33.55

Album price: $13.99
